It was in days lang syne, anrl Thorns had been ou a starring tonr with Dan. Marble into Canada, where a " beggarly account of empty boxes " had rewarded them for their Thespian toils. Marble had gone on to Jackson* villo, and Thorno remained at Wilson's Cross Roads, whero he had planned to pass the night at the only inn which the place afforded. Upon applying for a room lie was informed* that there was only one bed left, and that was in a room in which was another bed already engaged by Judge 13undy, of the llickman and McCrackeu Circuit of Kentucky. Our Thespian hero had heard of the Judge as a genial, companionable man, and offered no serious objection to tlie arrangement, though he would have preferred a sleeping room to himself. The Judge rotired at a late hour, and without a light ; and the actor also disrobed and sought his conch in the dark.? Botli 6lcpt well?slept po well that they lay veiy late in the morning ?lay, in fact, far into the day.? I The sun had been long np, and yet neither of them gave token of a disposition to arise ; but each eyed the other with nn interest and eagerness that at length became Iminfnl. Thorno could finally told his peace no longer, and called out to Iiis companion : "Say, Judge, why don't you get up 1" 44 It* it's a fair rejoinder," returned Bundy, drawing the 6heet more closely over his shoulders, 44 why don't you get up?*' 411 have a good and sufficient reason," replied the actor. 44 So have I," said the Judge. After a brief pause Thome proposed : 44 Give me your reason, and I will give yon mine." 44 Well," cried tho Judge, des perately, at the 6ainc time kicking off the bed clothing and planting liis feet upon the floor, 441 had no shirt, and disliked exceedingly to expose my unfortunate predicament." 44 Oho P echoed Thome, leaping from his bed with a jubilant bound, 44 why didn't you say so before ? That's exactly the 7/iatter with me /" They dressed jovially, and through the old-time friendship of the landlord for the Judge they were enabled, before they parted, to drink to each other better sue cess in the future. That success has been theirs. Thorne, after a brilliant professional career, has retired upon a competence ; while the Judge, only a few years since, passed down into the shadowy y vale, leaving wealth behind him, and a name honored and revered. An Snglisl} journal of a-recent date gives the subjoined account of a fearful ootnbat in a menagerie at Carnarvon, Wales, between a leopardess, three hyenas and a keeper i Mrs. Wonabol's Royal No. 1 Menagerie, which is on its way to Carnarvon, was thrown into a state of great excitement on Fri day night at Harlech. Shortly before the feeding, when the car nivora wore becoming exceedingly active and parading their respective dens with evident pleasure to expectation of their daily meal, a leopardess, which had its babi tation with three other performing leopards, bad quietly bored a small hole in tho partition, and at the eight ot three performing hyenas, her next-door neighbors, dashed through and made a terrible onslaught on the three animals. They in turn played their part?two of them remaining in deadly combat with the leopardess, while the third hyena, which had evidently learned that (light was sometimes the best part, of valor, escaped through the hole by which | I the leopardess had entered, only to find itsell surrounded by greati er dangers, namely ; throe growl- I itig leop&rd*. These appeared at first sight quite amazed at the unexpected visitor, nnd lor some ecc ouds held consultation by crouch j ing nnd growling at the farther end ot their den. A pol.cemau gave tho alarm, and Lorenzo, with the agility and intrepidity of a tiger, rushed into the hyena's den, and, inviting two keepers to follow liira, the three human figures could be seen in the midst of the combatants, who by this time had redoubled the tight. The grnsp was a terrible one, and a fatal one. Sooner than we can write one by cna lay dead. The leopardess released her captive only to make an attack upon the other. Lorenzo, rushing ut the neck of the leopardess, made an appeal to his two human comrades to icuch the leopards tail to Air. Lairgrieve and three other gentlemen who had Come up to the outside of the don. Then there was a sight worth see ing. The loojmrdessdoubled and redoubled, plunged, aud replunged but was safe so long as the tail was in the hands ot the captives. Self preservation then became the fii6t law of her nature, and with! the assistance of Lorenzo and his triends inside, the gasping hyena was released. During t.iia'scene within the hyena's den, other keepers managed, by shifting doors, to separate the fugitive hyena (No. 2) from the other leopard. D. ,W ANY a human being baa pas sod aw ay, II for whose death there waa no other won than the neglect of known and Indiatably proven means of care. Those near d dear to family and friends are sleeping i dreamless slumber into which, had they Imty adopted JOSEPH U. BCllENOK'S SIMPLE TREATMENT, . d availed themselves of his wonde.-ful efficaius medicines, they would not have fallen. Dr. Sohenk has in his own rase proved that lorover sufficient vitality remains, that vital', by his medictnea and the direction* ior sir use, is quickened into healthful vigor. Iu this statement there Is nothing presuroptus. To the faith of the invalid is mndo no iresontation that is not a thousand times t>stantiatcd by living and visible works. ie theory of the cure by Dr. Schenck's mediics is us simple as it is unfailing. Its pbiopby requires no argument. It is sell-asriuir, solf-coovincing. f lio Scawood Tonic and Mandrake Pills are J first two weapons with which tbo citadel tlio malady in assailed. Two-thirds of the *cs of consumption originate in dyspepsia d a functionally disordered liver. With this ndition tho bronchial tubes " sympathise " th tho stomacb. They respond to the morlu action of tho liver. Hero then comes the Imiiixting result, and tho setting in, with all distressing symptoms, of CONSUMPTION. The Mandrake Pills aro compered of one o iture's noblest- gifts?the Pjdophillium Peliiin. They possess all the blood-searching, crativo properties of calomel, but unlillo Ionic), they - LEAVE NO STING BEHIND." The work of cure is now leg inning. Tho :iatcd nud mucous deposits in tho bowels d in tlio alimentary canal are ejected. Tbo or, like a clock, is wound up. It arouses in its torpidity. Tho stomach acts rcsponely, ond the patient begins to feel that ho is King, at last, A SUPPLY OF GOOD BLOOD. The Scnwood Tonic, in conjunction with tlio lis, permeates and assimilates with the food. lyliGeation is nmv progressing without its cviuus toitores. Digestion hoc.men painless, d the cure is seen to be at bnnd. Thcro is more flatulence, no exacerbation of the stoich. An appetite sets in. Now comes tho greatest Dlooil Purifier ever t given by on indulgent father to suffering in. Scheuck's Pulmonic Syrup eom'-s in to r for in its functions and to hasten and emote tho cure. It enters nt once rpon its >rk. Nature cannot be cheated. It collects d ripens tlie impaired and diseased portions the limns. In the fuim oi gatherings, it rparos them for expectoration, and lo 1 in a iv short tiui? the malady is vanquished, tiie tteu throno that it occupied is renovated uud ide new, and the patient, in nil tho dignity regained vigor, steps forth to enjoy tho manud or tho womanhood that was. GIVEN UP AS LOST. The second tiling is, tho pntients must stayit warn, room until they get well-; it is uN >st impossible to prevent taking cold when s lungs, ure diseased, but it must be provon1 or a cure cunnot be effected. Fresh air d riding out, especially iu this section of 3 country iu the fall and winter season, are wrong. Physicians who recommend that irso lose their patients, if their lungs ore liy diseased, und yet, because they are in i house they must uot sit down quiet; they iat walk about tho room as tuitob uud as fast the strength will hear, to get up a good cirlution ol blood. Tho putients must keep in jd spirit;'?be determined to get well. This i a gretut deal to do with the appetite, and the great point to gain. I'o despair <>f cure utter such eridenoe of its tsibiiiiy in tho woist eases, and inorul ccrnty in all others, is sinful. Dr. 8chenck'i sons! statement to tho Faculty of Lis own e was in these modest words : ' .Many years ago I was in the laat stages of isuinptiim ; confined to my bed, and nt one ic my physiciuns thought that I could not i a week ; then, liJ?.o n drowning man catchnt straws, I heard of and obtained the preutions which I now tfl'cr to the public, and y made n perfect cure ot mo. They soon ripened the matter in my gs, and I would spit up more than a pint iffencivo yellow jmuttcx every moruing for ng time. s soon as that began to subaido, in/ cough, sr, pain and night sweats all began to e me, and my appetite became so great . it was with difficulty that I could keep > eating too much. I soon gained my ugth, und have grown in flesh ever since."
