The Air-Line Hal frond Depot. Tim exact location ie not yet announced, bat we ere fearfel that it will be placed a little too far from the eenter of the City te satisfy the reasonable expectations of our oltlaena genrcally. We think the Baoe Track too far off. That point la talked of, provided the road runt north of the City. The nearer the depot ia to the center of business, the better for its own and ail interests connected with it. This is a matter that concerns onr eitisens generally. We hope, wherever located, the depot will he within a balf-mile, or three* quarters at farthest, of the puDlto square.? We have great confidence, however, in the jadgment and eorreet motives of those who have the management and control of the lo> cation, and that they will donbtless consult the best interests of the City, and every thing that can be done, compatible with the interests of the road, to locate the depot just at the right place to satisfy all reasonable people. The Air-Line from Greenville to Spartanburg, is found to be 30 miles. The traveled road is over 31. The railroad track between the two places, we learn, will not exceed 39 miles, asd may he lees. Another Hall road Charter. We notice in the correspondence of the Charleston Republican writing from Colombia, that another bill is now before the Legislature to charter the Cheraw, Lancaster, Union and Greenville Railroad Company.? We hope the long-talked-of extension of the Grecnviiie A Columbia Railroad to Asheville, North Caooiina, will not be lost sight of by the present sitting Legislature. We believe* that if such a road was built, it would add as great welth to this State, (and at the sametime meet .the approbation of its eitisens,) as any road that may be chartered by the Legislature. If the Cheraw Railroad shall be built, and the Greenville Road to Ashe? ville, with the Air-Line Railroad completed to bis City, Greenville will truly be the second Atlanta. The correspondent of the Republi. can speaking of the first-named railroad company, says: "The hill for the charter of this road contemplates connection between Cheraw and Greeni ille. in a more <iir*c> ll>>? ii>.? ?? exists, through the counties of Chesterfield, Lancaster, Greenville, Union, and Spartanburg, to Greenville Court noose, granting all the rights and privileges usually bestowed apon such enterprises, and vesting the charter in Joseph D. Bates, Anson W. Thayer, Lucius Wimbush, Joel Foster, II. C. Duvall, James M. Allen, II. II. Montgomery, Junius S. Mobley, A. L. Singleton, J. F. Pendergraes, Thomas Wilson, II. L. Smith and Timothy Hurley, and their associates; the capital stock to be $3,000,000, in shares of $33 each ; books to be opened for subscription for thirty days; the subscribers to pay $2 upon each share, and when $100,000 shall have been paid, the company to then organise, and to eo-operate with such other chartered roads of the State as may be deemed for the best interest of the corporation. The act to continue in force for twenty-one years." Tbe correspondence of the Charleston Courier also writing from Columbia, says that the Cheraw and Greenville Railroad project, is regarded as very important, as it will connect tbe western and eastern part of the State, and that tbe road will be " pushed through " rapIdly, ac soon as tbe charter Is obtained. The Murderer of Col. 'White. We notice in the Charleston Nett* of the tb instant, that a young man by the name of Eli Grimes, of Lee Count/, Georgia, has been arrested for the murder of Colonel Wm. Parker White, who, it will be remembered, was murdered on the night of the Tth March, 1364, nea( Georgetown, S. C. On the 6th Inst., Governor 8corr, upon the applieation of Mr. Stetheh McAllestbr White, son of tbe deeeased, issued a requisition upon the Governor of Georgia, for the person of Eli Grimes, charged with tbe murder of Colonel White. Officer Coats, one of the State Con. ia?uiary, immediately went in pursuit of Grimes, who he found, efter visiting several sections of Georgia, in McDuffie County, of that State. Grimes was a mere youth when he committed the dreadful deed, being about Id or 17 years of age. Since bis arrsest, he has made a full confession, implicating C. C. Bowss, now a Representative in Congress from Cbsrleston. The Charleston iVews further says, that CC. Bowen was arrested in 18A4, and would have been tried for complicity in the murder ef Colonel White, bad it not been for the advent of the Federal army, which released -all ef the criminals of that city from prison.? Mr. White was Colonel of the 2hst Battalion ef Georgia Cavalry, and was stationed in this Btste, near Georgetown, when be was murdered. Grimes has been committed to prison, and when brought forth and put upon the stand, wilt make a clear statement of things that bare long been a mystery. Grimes made ao resistance when being arrested, and was taken by officer Coats to Charleston unfettered, where be now remaios. Justice will overtake the evil-doer. ... .. , i The Teat Oath Bapaaled. One of the favorite measures for squandering money, has been the Investigating ' conynitteee, that headed by Jon Caaws, which went about inmtligating the Congressional election, it appears, had >7 thousand dollars appropviated for its use, and the Daily Uaion makes a calculation showing that the committee do not account for nt least ten thousand dollars. The whole of it was a useless waste of the publio money. We have elsewhere spoken of the Important railroad charters that are before the Lsgie leture. Mr. Atxax hee introdured a bill in the Senate to authorise the County Commissioners of Oreeav ills, Spartanburg and Ocon-e.to levy a special tax. This refers, we suppose to the Air-Line. The Herald it not only one of the great est journals in the world for general news and information from all parts of the earth, and lbs whole circle of current topics en* g*K>"g the attention of mankind, but it is also, in our opinion, foremost in the finan* cial affairs of the country. In a series o' editorials, the Herald has been demonstra* ting to Congress and the country the policy and necessity of reducing rather of abolish* ing the internal taxes. If the people of the | United States are not entirely besotted and | Incapable of protectlnsr their rtoKia t?>? ballot. tbey will fo?ce Congress to relieve them of their burdens. The Herald maintains, wilh great force; the slew that has always struck us as the right one regarding the poliey of paying off the national debt". It is shown to be greet ! folly and injustice to the people to tax them | to reduce the principal of the national debt at the present time. The debt was con. tracted, not alone for this generation, but for posterity as well ; and the gradual growth of the population and resources of the country will enable the people at a future lime to pay the debt as it matures, without the distress that must attend the 1st tempt s to do so at present. We can see no reason in the boast ot Secretary ofTreasu- I ry of his payiog some millions of the debt by present taxation, but vain glory at the expense of terrible burdens on the entire people. This is no party question, hut one of figure: and common sense, and there are ' Republican politicians and journals that are < opposing the present burdens of taxation a * well as the Democrats. I Whilst we Ci mm?nd the course of the ' lit raid on the tax and public debt ques'ion i we make one exception, which is, its oppo- t sition to the income tax. But the great tn? j come journals and the representative of mil lionaires all take the same course on that question, as is natural. That lax should be 1 kept up and'graduated according to the ex*- * penses of the government. This is the on- ' ly course that will bring the influence of 1 the money power lo fevor of- retrenchment 1 end eeonomy, and thus relieve the heavy ' burdens oi the common people. ???? Hon. W. P.
