occurred last week. Ulbicit, the French
commander, surrendered at laat, with seveenteen
thousand troops and an immense
amount of cannon and military stores.?
The Prussians besieging the place were
eighty thousand atrong. How the greater
part of this army will ba added to the be
siegers of Mela, which it ia thought must
soon likewise surrender; then tha Prus
sians will gnin porseasion of the two fortresses
commanding the part of France which
they desire to annex, which anciently be* I
longed to Germany, and which Bismabck '
deems esaer.tial to prevent another French
war in the near lutura.
The French are said to have about five '
hundred thousand irregular troops in the 1
city of Paris, and are determined to atand 1
a siege. It is to be hoped, however, that *
the fall of Strasbourg, and the expected surrender
of Met*, will terminate this deplora
hie*war. France will never regain those
eitiea, in all probability, and it seems nothing
but fair play, as they were once wrested
from Germany by war, that they should
be regained hy the same ageney.
The numerous telegrams of battles and i
sk irrmahes near Paris are all considered of 1 1
doubtful accuracy ; we ahall soon hear, perhaps,
more decisive news.

Meeting of the South Carolina Presbytery.
This body met in Washington Street Presbyterian
Church, in tnis City, at 7$ o'clock, P.
M. on Thursday, 19th nit. The attendance was
very fair, yet not so full at was expected. The
body was organised by the eleetion of Rev. TH.
Law, pastor of the Spartanburg Church,
Moderator, and Rev. W. P. Jacobs Stated
Clerk. Presbytery held morning and evening
sessions, wkiek were conducted in a spirit of
brotherly kindness and lov*. ' The business
transacted was important and considerable,
but not of any special interest to the general
reader. Rev. A. A. Moree, Chairman of tbe
Committee on Domestic Missions, gave a very
elaborate report, embracing, suggestions to
Presbytery which if carried out, will do much
good.
On Sunday, the pulpits of tbe Baptist, Methodist
and Presbyterian Churches wore filled by
ministers of Presbytery, npon invitation of
each. Rev. W. F. Pearson preached in tbe
Methodist Church, at 11 o'clock, A. M.; Rev.
J. O. Lindsay occupied tbe Baptist pulpit at

pulpit, me hour. At night, Rer. C. B. Stewart
preached for the congregation of the Color*
ed Methodist Church, and Rer. R. H. Reid in
the Presbyterian.
During the morning service in the latter
the Lord's Supper was dispensed, at which a

The citisens of Qreenrille entertained the
Presbytery with their usual hospitality and
kindness ; for which they were more than compensated
by the pleasure and interest of their 1
itay. The body adjourned at 10 o'clock P. M.f 1
Saturday night, and will hold their Spring 1
