Bob White.
bt a. a. iHiriMD.
??
Hallway ripe is the waey wheat.
Abroad in the fields where it stands breast
blghj <
Soft as a whisper and strangely sweet.
The breath of the wind ae it waadere by;
" Bob White J"
Hark ! whose Is It, the voioe I bear T
Calling aloud in tb? tall grain near,
? Bob White r
Hotter each day grows the warm June sun,
A (bade more purplo the sky's deep bias,
And the bright June roeos have just begun
To sprinkle their leaves with an ashen hne ;
?' Byb White I"
There it Is calling again and again,
Sweet and clear from the amber grain,
" Bob Whlto!"
" What does the little bird say, my son f *'
The father asks of bis fsrfr haired boy,
Where over the porch the wild vines ran,
And the humming-bee mariners his sovg of
i?7 >
" Bob White r
Sounding aloud as the voioe draws nigh,
And the innocent lips ef the child reply,
" Bob White!"
One shrill note and a whirr of wings.
/xnwkjr iu wk iuuuicuit ujmg ivn(
As over the looso wall lightly springs
Tho farmer lad with rnko and boo ;
"Hub White!"
Whistles the boy, while bis big black eyes
Follow the flock wherever It flies?
" Bob White I"
A so A, sleek coat of a darkish brown,
And a speckled wnlstcnat of a lighter shade,
Passing to white where it reaches down,
With breeches of chestnut trimly made ;
"Bob White I"
This is be whom wo ^ear repeat,
All day long in tbo ripening wheat,
" Bob White 1"
Two half circles around the throat, . ..
One pale streak on bis lordship's crown,
And all over the back of his quakcr ooat ?
Paler streaks of a yellowish brown ;
"Bob White!" J '
This is he who fattens and thrives,
Down in tbs wheat where he calls to his wives,
" Bob White 1"
A famous Mormon bo Is, I'm told ;
Full of lovo for the softer sex,
With a heart like on eagle's, quick and hold,
And a spirit fiery and ensy to vex ;
? Boh White I"
It it his own or another's name
That he keeps repeating always tho snmo?
"Bob Whitel"
A lew dried leaves and some bi's of bay
Under a tuft of sheltering grass ;
Hid in a hollow ont of the way,
Whore only by chance a foot may pass?
" Bob Whitel"
Thus be calls now tbo nest is made ;
Thus bo will call till the eggs are laid;
''Bob White!"
Yellowish white the brittle shell,
Hpccklcd with brown like his own little breast.
Watched, and tended, and guarded well,
A dozen or more in the homely nest,
"Bob White!"
For Icon frequent and something dry,
The roice of our friend no the dayo go by?
? Hob White!"
A smart young fellow hi* son and heir.
Heady at once from his nest to room;
Little of trouble and little to care?
Brings tho boy to the mother at home,
" Bob White r
Almost silenced the onee clear tone
Now that the season of love is flown?
" Bob Wbite !"
There In tho grass where the dew hangs damp,
Erer watchful of any harm,
Book to back in a eirenlar eamp,
Heady to rise at the least alarm,
? Bob White!"
Sits from the time tba twilight falls,
All through the night, while no shrill throa1
calls,
" Bob Whits!"
Byand-I.y when the summer is dead,
And the glowing hand of the autumn weaves
Uorgeous patterns of purple and red,
With gold and brown in the orchard's leaves,
? Bob Whiter
Itown in tbe stubble, piping low,
No longer shall call, as the bright days go,
" Bob White!"

A Tough Goose 8 to ry.
There ouoe lived in one of oqr
Northern town*, not many tnfle*
from'Conway, N. II., an (Secentrtc
individual by the name f Fogg,
whose fame an a story teller was
known for miles around. One in
his own words:
* My house was situated in a
glen some six miles distant froin
the stage road. Between Conway
and where 1 lived was a pond six
miles in circumference. It so
happened one time early in the
spring that I had been out late,
and in coming borne I discovered
a flock of geese as they were jnst
alighting in the pond. Rising
early next morning, I built the tire
in the fiiepluce, and taking down
the old shooting iron, I started for
the pond to try my luck. Arriving
on shore, I found to my sorrow
that they were out of gun shot,
and to fire at that distance would bo ,
sheer folly. While I stood con-1
tempi at nig what to do a tox came
down to the water's edjge and stood i
enwmng me atr. M.y nrsc mongiit
was to eh not him, but on reflection
] concluded to sec what be would
do. The fo.x in the meantime eutend
the water and was swimming
for the geese which were huddlod
togethei about half a mile fiom the
shore. After swimming to within
a few yards of them, he suddenly
disappeared, and in a few moments
a goose was drawn under
water, then Reynard returned on
liis homeward passage and landed
his burden on shore, then return*
ing again, brought another, until
finally be got the whole flock, and
when he brought the last one I
shot him. When I uauio to pick
up the geese 1 found that I had
f:ot titty good nice ones, which I
ugged homo, together with the
fox and my gnu. The old woman
bad not got breakfast quite ready
then.
But, Mr. Fogg, the fox to capture
the geese had to swim hall' a
mile tor each goose: consequently
the fox swain fifty miles and nsthu
geese averaged six pounds a piece,
making the sum of three hundred
pounds, to say nothing of the t?>*
and gnu ; the thing was impossible.
" Impossible or not, every word
of it is truth," exclaimed the old

and a lively row ensued. Tho
next Sunday the goat returned

followed by tho sexton ot the

Poor Nanny was barelv able to

The enraged sexton explained that
a week before, 011 shutting up the
church, lie had unintentionally
locked 'he goat in, and having remained
there a week, she had sacrilegiously
destroyed tho bibles
and hymn books, hnd torn up tho
cushions and behaved otherwise
in an irreligious and iconoclastic
manner. In tact, there was 6trong
circumstantial evidence that the
nnconseciated creature hud occupied
the Dominie's pulpit; for all
of which the sexton demanded
damages of tho owner.
