" I will have thai moose ! said tbeelder ton,
" You shan't bare that moos*!" said the little

I told you before 'twas a stormy night
When these two kittens began to fight;
The old woman seised her sweeping-broom.
And swept the two kittens right out of the
room.
The ground was covered with frost and snow,
And the two little kittens had nowhere to go;
So they laid them down on the mat at the
door,
While the old woman finished sweeping the
floor.
Then they crept In as quiet as mice,
All wet with snow and as oold as ioe,
For they found it was better, that stormy
night,
To lie down and sleep than to quarrel and
fight.
Conversation Under Difficulties.
It is not the correct thing at all
to laugh at tho misfortunes of people
; but what can one do when
placed in the position narrated in
the following, by a welcome Connecticut
correspondent:
In the procession that followed
f;ood Deacon Jones to the grave
ast summer, Rev. Mr. , the
new Minister of East Town, found
himself in the carriage with an
elderly man whom he he had never
before met. They rode in grave
sileuce for a few moments, when
the clergyman endeavored to improve
the occasion by serious conversation.
"Thisis a solemn duty in which
we are engaged, my friend," said
lie.
"Hey? what do yon say, sir?"
tho old man returned. " Can't
yon sneak louder ? I'm hard of
hcarin'."
" 1 was remarking," shouted tho
minister, "that this is a solemn
road we are travelling to-day."
" Sandy road / You don't call
this ere sandy, do yet I guess
you ain't been down to the South
deestrict. There's a stretch of
road on tho old pike that beats all
I ever see for Lard travelin'. On
ly a week alore Dencon Jones was
tuck sick I met bim drivin' his ox
team along there, and the sand
was pretty nigh np to the Lube of
the wheels. The Deacon mo to
get dretful riled 'bout that piece
of road, and East Town does go
ahead of all creation for sand."
The young minister looked blank
at the unexpected turn given to
his remark; but quietly recovering
himself, and raising-his voice
to its highest pitch, he resumed
the conversation.
"Our friend has done with all
the discouifoits of earth," he 6aid
solemnly. " A small spot of
ground will soon cover his poor
senseless clay."
"Did you 6ay cZay, sir?" 6aid

bo good to cover sand with as medder
loam. Sez I to Mr. Brewer,
last town mcetin' day, if you'd
cart on a few dozen loads?and
there'6 acres of it on the river
bank, 6cz I you'd make as pretty a
piece of road as there is in IJar'ford
Count}'. But we are slow folks in
East Town, sir."
It was perhaps fortunate for the
Minister at that moment, that the
smell of new made hay from a
neighboring field suggested a fresh
train of thought.
41 Look," said tie, with a graceful
wave of the hand, 44 what an emblem
of the brevity of human lifel
As the grass of the field, so man
flourishetb, tomorrow ho is cut
down."
441 don't calculate to cut mine
till next week," said his companion.
44You musn't cut grass too
arl v ; and then, agin, you musn't
cut it too late."
4 My friend,' shrieked the minis-1
ter, in a most desperate attempt
to make himself understood, 4 this
is no place for vain conversation.
We are approaching the narrow
bouse appointed for all the living.'
They were entering tho graveyard,
but the old man stretched
his neck from the carriage window
in the opposite direction.
