Four Hundred Miles Up Stairs.
" Reading about electricity, lightning,
and the telegraph, the other
day," said Uncle Petor, u reminded
tno of a cutions story Z once '
heard, when I was in England." 5
It 6cems There was a newspaper 1
in the eity of Glasgow, in Scotland, ^
which employed a London correspondent.
1 he correspondent made
it his duty to gather the news every
day and send it to Glasgow

lie made an agreement with
an operator at a certain office, by
which his news was sent to Glasgow
at a reduction by the year.
One night he arrived at the
lower door, at the foot of the stairs
leading up into the telegraph office.
The door was locked, aud ho could
not open it.
Ihe telegraph office was way
up to the top of the building, in
the sixth story. The operator had
a bed there, to which ho retired
promptly at three o'clock; and it
wua now half-past two.
me operator up Stairs yawned
and looked at bis watcb. " Jenkins
won't come to night," said be;
"I may as well go to bed."
And there was poor Jenkins all
the time ponnding away on the
door at the foot of the long stairs
unable to get in.
" Hillo! np there 1" he cried,
looking at the window of the telof;raph
office, that glowed with
ight. " Hillo I Jones! Somebody
has locked the outside door, and I
can't get in."
"\Vbat'e the row?" said a policeman
coming along.
" I'm locked out," said Jenkins.
" Here I've got a batch of tliff most
important news for my paper?a
murder, three fires, and a riot?
and the door locked in my face,
and I can't get in. Wbat will I
dot"
So the policeman began banging
the door, but Jones, the operator,
up in his office, was as unconscious
of the tumult as if it bad been in
tbo moon. Ho was whistling to
himself and yawning prodigiously.
"Why don't you go to some
bother office?" asked the police.man."
" No authority to use any other 1
line," said the correspondent.?
" Ah I I've got it 1" he added, and
before the policeman could ask 1
what "it was," the excited Jenkins
bad dashed off down street as
if a mad dog was after him.
Jenkins rushed breat< lessly into
another telegraph office, six blocks
off.
w I say!" said be to the operator.
" Fin in a fix I Got news to go
oft' inside of half an boar, and the
stnpiu operator at my office baa
gone to sleep, and I can't get in?
and?and?and?"
** Well, that is a fix?"*
"Tell yon what I want," said
Jenkins, endeavoring to catch bit
breath, " I want you to telegraph
down to Glasgow, and ask the operator
there to telegraph np here
to Jones, and bid him come down
stairs and let me in I" j
Tbe operator roared with langh- ^
tor at this, but went at oncto to bis i
instrument and began rattling *
away at a great rate. d
This is the message be sent:
"Glasgow. Wake up Jones,
Station A ; tell him Jenkins at tlm
loot of tbe ?f*irs can't get in." 1
Jonee wae looking at bia watch
again, and concluded that be had
better put out tbe lights and go to
hie little bedroom across the ballway;
when clatter! clatter I wont
