[From the SulHreo Cooiity Union.J
One'of;tfa?H^US^Up?id wonderful
disqoverieiL-oi the ago,
made in tbeCurry ville eoal mines, ;
Sullivan county, Indiana, a few
days ago. At a depth of one
hundreu and eighty feet below tbe .
tirface, while tbe miners were cutng
through a slato stone, they discovered
the petrified body of a
sea serpent. Wo examined (he petrifaction
and can 6ay with truth that
it is the finest specimen we ever saw.
Unfortunately it wn9 broken into
thrco pieces, and a piece from near
the center is misting?nerhane
thrown out in a silver stone.
A limb had evidently fallen
across tlio serpent about eight or
ten inches from the head, and
mashed the part nndernenth flat,
and strange to say, oven this thin
part was formed into solid stone
land was taken out perfect. The
wrinkles In the body of the serpent
in its writhing, as if to extricate
itselt from the stick that fell
across it, were perfect and natural
as the day the affair took place.
The head is shaped like that of an
eel, and the tail, from indications,
must have been Supplied
with a broad fin, or a flat fleshy
substance as a propeller. The
eyes aud the mouth can be distinctly
traced, while tlio body is cover,
ed with small sunken spots, similar
to thoso on hog skin, though
not 6o small or numerous. This
i specimen is five feet three inches
. long, near ten inches around the
| largest pari of the body.
i xii iiuutuuu 10 mis most singular
curiosity, perfect impressions of
leaves, liinl>3. brush and other
samples of vegetation were taken
out at this enormous depth.?
Among these was a beautiful itn
pression of what is familiarly called
snnko weed, or fern, which grows
in almost every valley throughout
the Western country.
The most singular specimen is 1
\et to be described, and in attempting
to communicate the fact to our
readers, we feel as though the history
of our earth is just as much
a mystery to the prescut generation
as to those who inhabited it before
? tbo flood?the "half having not
j yet been told." Thoeole of a shoe
j or sandal, was taken out in a coini
plete state of petritaction. The
heel is almost riorfnot and tlin iin.
r y i J ?
I pression.of something in the heel,
resembling tacks or nails, is plain
and distinct. This specimen is
, about eight inches long and of the
usual width.
} The petrified serpent was- taken
p to Tene liaute and presented to
Mr. Cbauncy Rose, who will disimpose
of it as ho may think best.?
] ' We suggest, however, that it, with
tho shoo or sandal s< le and the
other specimens, be placed in the
Normal School building, as relics
' of tho unwritten history of the
? past ages of the Wabash valley.
"An exchange says: u The cownrd
who would, strike the mother
of his children deserves to be shod
with lightning and condemned to
wander eternally over a desert ?f
gunpowder."
A uttle girl, excited by the
0 brilliant display of her aunt's gold
plugged front teeth, exclaimed :
" Oh, Aunt Mary, how I do wish
I had copper-toed teeth liko you."

1st. It is more Liberal to the Insurers tbun

the iusnrers.
3d. The loans of this Company are as liberal
