And gushing wild and free,
. A flashing utreamlot bounds along,
Beneath the shady tree.
The vine hath twined the oak around,
Its tendrils fondly eling,

That shade the Forest Spring.

The elustering bunchee rest,
Upon their leafy eouch, whioh seerua

Peter, from imbibing too freely of
various mixtures, began dancing

some ices and cakes, and soon became
uproarious. Observing bis
conduct, the Major publicly rep
rimanded him, and at once dismissed
him from the post of waiter
for the evening, and appointed
another servant in his place. This
last stroke was too much for old
Potcr, and he retired to his bedroom
in despair. That night Capt.
K., a jolly young officer in the
room adjoining Peter's, hearing
sobs and groans in tbo next room,

room and reconnoitered.
Peter was kneeling bv a window,
and praying. Amid his loud j
cries, the Captain heard the following
:
"O, Lord, have pity upon thy

Captain K., ever ready for fun,
immediately seized upon a white
counterpane, and enveloping him
self in it, rapped three times at
Peter's door.
" Who's dare?" exclaimed Peter.
"The Angel Gabriel, come to
take old Peter to Father Abra

in a sepulchral tone.
"Do who, massa?" fearfully
asked the suppliant.
" Old Peter."
44 Well, I'll just tell you, massa,
dat nigger don't live here ; I don't
know him at all 1"
Captain K. rushed back to the
company, convulsed with laughter,
and old Peter relates to this day
the wonderful answer to his prayer.

Strango as it may appear, there is considerable

And now for the sequel. In 1842 or
an old Frenchman was engaged a* teacher

conclusively prove tliot tliis old man was
Napoleon's favoiite Marshal, who, through
the connivance of friend*, escaped dca'b?

loaded with blank cartridge. The ex>Maralio
