The ProftMorin e*ix
Some students iu one of oar col- ,
leges being frequently annoyed by
the nocturnal and inquisitorial ,
visits of a professor, who euspeotod
therm of playing cards, cue ,
evening prepared a kettle of mush
otherwise "canea nnsvv pauwag,
and by the time it was boiled, had <
seated themselves aroand the table
in the attitude of card-playing,
waiting patiently for the well,
known step of the professor. It
was no sooner beard than a large
outside pocket of one of them was
forthwith filled with hasty podding,
and ail were seated as before.
As soon as the professor had
opened* the door, the student . who
was loaded with the mush made a
sudden sweep over the table with
his hand, as if to gether np the
cards, and with another motion
apparently put them into the pocket
cootainiug the musb. These
muvwmouio wuiu uut uvip lwiiig
noticed, as they were intended to
be, by the professor, who, considering
them as a pretty strong evidence
of goilt, broke oat with the
following: uWell, young gentloraen,
I've caught you at last, have
I!"
" Whv, yes, sir, we are all here."
44 So I see y oh are, and yon have
been playinjr cards, too."
u No, sir, it is not so."
" It isn't, ha! What have you
got in your pocket, young man f"
" Hot hasty pudding, sir."
?Ilot hasty pudding, ha! hasty
pudding, have you V I'll hasty
puddiog you," said the professor,
at jlia same time tbrnRting Inn hand
half way to the elbow into the hot
hasty pndding.
The dolorous looks, the shaking
of fingers, tho groaning and caper6
of the professor, belong to the
sphere of imagination, not description.

" No beans," said the child.

Dlsino tub Was.?An important question
to inauranoe companies, aa regards
policies isaaed by them, before the war, on
livea of partiee domiciled at the Scotb and

It appears that the International Life Assurance
Society, of London, having a loeal
board and agency at New York, had, before
the war, insured, at New York, the
life of Mr. Maemurdo, domiciled at Richmond.
Maemurdo, for a year before his
death, whieh ocourred in 1801, during the
war, paid hia premiums to the company's
special agent, at Richmond, iu Confederate
notes. The present action is to recover the
amount Insured.
The company defend, on tha ground that,
as they were domiciled hero, and the poWey
having been made and continued In tb}#

therein, the company were under the same
legel obligations arising under the war as
citizens. They claim, therefore, that the

daring the war, became illegal, as op*

the war, became suspended, for the same
reason aathoee made daring the war; and
that, if the loss happened during sueh suspeneion,
there eould be no reoovery. It
wna claimed, also, that a neutral domiciled
here wae under equal restraint, as regards
sueh polleiee, ae domestic companies, and
that it woald be ea illegal for a neutral to
eetablieh a domicile in the State and continue
a policy on an enemy'e life therein, es
