?Mrs. Jllhston. ? In the present vol
ume, page 311, \*e copied from n
New-York paper, a horrid account
of the fate of t his lad v, taid to have
been given by a pirate under sen
tence of death at New-Orleans. Ac
ceunts from that city now assure us,
that no such confession was ever
made there. Indeed, soon after the
' * ?
publication of the tale, we thought it
untrue from certain facts stated by a
? much esteemed friend, whose for
tune it was to be a prisoner on board
of admiral Warren's ship [the St.
Domingo, I believe] during the war.
While op board, he frequently heard
the officers speak of Mrs, Allston ?
liow that the admiral had given up
his cabin to her^-that she was ex
ceedingly glad to find a woman ou
board the ship, a petty officer's wife,
who was ordered to wait upon her, ?
that a female domestic who accom
panied her was afraid to leave the
pilot boat, and the officer who had
charge of that boat was much joked
with on account of it, &c. Not be
ing particularly interested in the case,
he made no special enquiries ; but
it ccartainly appears that the pilot
boat was captured by the British,
and thfct the lady was treated with
great respect and sent away, after
being some time on board the admi
ral's ship. This is all he knows of
the matter ; but it is sufficient to de
stroy the story that the crew of the
pilot boat, after being " two or three
- days at sea/' rose upon the captain,
&C. Any friend of the lady may
have a reference tp the gentleman al
luded to, through the editor of the
Kegister,
Germany.?^ The restrictions of
the press on the continent of Europe,
particularly in Germany and France,
are so rigorous, that we cannot pos
sibly obtain information sufficient to
enable us to judge with any degree
of accuracy, as to the real situation
of affairs, Now and then an editor
has the courage darkly to hint at
troubles, either existing or apprehen
. ded. - But a prison, .or a heavy fine;
or both, usually compel jo immediate
silence. From a recent article upon
the state of Germany, which appear
ed )n the Berlin Gazette of the 6th
of June, wc have gathered the fol
lowing information It is stated as
certain, that it is said that the trial
of Sandt will very soon prove it,
that the crime of this young fanatic
is connected with ft very extensive
plot. He has concealed the names
of those of whom he was the agent ;
and he has undergone a sentence
much less rigorous than that to which
the law condemns criminals convicted
of high treason. But letters an^
articles which he could not deny, es
tablish in an authentic mariner, that
there exists an association which
tends to nothing lessjhan to overturn
all governments, and to poniard the
thirty three tyrants marked oqt by an
, express list. Sandt, according to
his own confession, was, after the
assassination of Kotzebue, to post
Dp a seditious proclamation, and to
suspend his bloody poniard at the
door of the church of the Jesuits of
Manheim, and immediately to seek
refqge in France-^but his head turn
ed, and, in place of flying, he strove
to pierce his own heart,

A happy choice of words . ? A gen
tleman, Known for bis habitual tar
diness, was invited to join a party to
Nahaut ; ami appointed for that pur
pose to be at his 'friend's house, at
an early hour in the morning. Con
trary to all expectation, lie was the
first on the ground ; and his friend,
in surprise at his punctuality, burst
out in the following lucid apostrophe.
4* Ho, you've com z first at last ; you
used to be behind before ; I suspect
jyou get up early of fate; It is well
ou called in season, you would noj
ave found nie within without .
