The Missouri Convention*
This body, we observe, in a latt
St. Loui* pa|>er, have determined
the important question of slavery, by
prohibiting the interference of the
Legislature on this subject, 'further
thau to stop the importation of slaves
for sale . ? The following paragraph
we have copied from the St, Louis

" The committee appointed to draft
a constitution for the State of Mis
nmu4, reported yesterday. The ar
ticle- which will be first inquired af
ter is to (lie following effect : ? Tl>e
Legislature shall have no power to
manumit slaves except on condition
of paying their full value to their
ownm ^ H shall have no power to
prevent emigrants from bringing; their
slaves into this State : it shall have
power to prevent slaves from being
brought to Missouri to be sold as
Merchandize : person* who have
been/ or may he brought into the
United States in violation of the laws
of Congress for the suppression of
the foreign slave trade, shall be free
on arriving in the State of Missouri ;
their posterity likewise ; the right of
}u>ry trial for offences hl>ove the gwle
of petit larceufcy is secured to slaves;

assign them counsel w hen they have
it nor: if convicted, to be punished

and distress.
