It is remarkable to observe t lie great improvements which have been made ia the United States, within a very few j tars in the construction of Steam Machinery, I have exam ined one lately invented and con structed by one of the ingenious ci tizens of our native State, Mr. Jons Spkinu. It is altogether on a new construction. It is not complex but extremely simple, and its component parts readily understood from the explanation of the inventory by any person very superficially acquainted with machinery. I have seen the model in operation, and the facility of its motion, combined with the force and euergy of its action, sur passes any thing lever beheld. The g:eut advantage this improvement has over the present mode of propel ling Steam Engines is, that there are no dead points as cranks have, which lire dispensed with in the present in vention, aml-a- double lack ami two spur w heels substituted, by which the machinery is propelled. From jl fair calculation, it possesses, at least double the power of any kind of Htearn Engiue uow iu use. It is *piite immaterial in what position the piston is placed w hen the Engine is to be started. This invention is so constructed, that it can be attached to any engine at a very trifling ex pense, and is not only adapted to Steam Navigation, Mill Machinery and other practical purposes in life, to which the. power or agency of Steam/ is now applied; but, also, to travelkips and the transportation of gotkU by land, in which its capa city to ascend hills is remarkable* It is truly a noble invention, and 1 hope that the proprietor may obtain a patent, apd reap a rich reward for his iugenious and useful exertion in the arqi, A FRIEND TO MERIT. ABSCONDED from the Subscriber, on Sunday night the 36th ult. one bound apprentice Boy, named WILLIAM BROn JS", a Shoe-Maker, about five feet six inches high, nineteen or twenty years of age, ftur, hair, light complexion, hazle eye, heavy built and soft features ; took with him a Sorrel Hone MAKE between fourteen and fifteen hands high, with the loss of the right eye, between nine or ten years old, with a blaze in her face ; look with him a Brass English WATCH Gilt Face, with a remarkable broad Brass CHAIN; wore away a Fur Hat, a mixed Coat and blue Pantaloons. The said Boy has no know ledge of letters ; any person apprehend ing the said Boy, together with the pro perty, and return them to me ut Concord, ( N.
