CAMDEN*
THURSDAY, APRIL 6,
Wam ol* thlfe compelled us to be very
biief in our observation* on an extraordi
nary paragraph in the^elescopc of tlie
S>8tl| m\u The writer has very* ingenious
ly brought forward the clause which rend
ers the opening of . the Road from the
Mountains to Columbia imfltrattve on the
Commistfoners but, he has choaen to
forget the title and tenor of tfce whole law,
evidently giving extensive discretionary
powers to the commissioners. That they
ihttot open the Road from Columbia, is as
evident ^s that % they may opcfl the Road
from- Camden. Hence the assertion of
the commissioners, 44 not having the ppwer
to gramM the Road in question, ia just a*
ti ^e as that the people of Camden have
" sliewn symptoms of discontent because a
great Road has not been laid out to tlu
Mountains at well as froim Columbia."
\>oth assertions are erroneous.
While on thd subject, We* wdfald also,
observe that Gen. '^Wxlliam? is advertising
for 54 Itands to work oft the Pee Dee. His
laborer* have not commenced as has been
asserted. Col. Nixon has tg^g a n his ope^
ationsoirthe Wateree. To exhibit Jiiyofb
of the power of his machinery, he rad^aT an(1
has completely removed ail imtfCnsely
large log, that has long been a serious im
pediment in the neighborhood of lf?e Town,
and to 6o which, mttpy ineffectual avid
expensive attempts h- ve been flipfeatedte
made. We shall report his movements
from time to time, (having no wish to off
ceal the work done in our vicinity) and,
have no doubt his progress, whether is to
be confined to the River, or extended to
the Road, witt afford general satisfaction.
The works at Rocky Mount, are also pro
ceeding aj* well as the Canal in Columbia.
To the latter, we shfll pay some attention,
as it is tifrtikely our fellow CitUens will
hear any tiling on the subject through any
other channel. We shall take leave of the
subject for the present, by asking, whe
ther Jhe commissioners huve not equal
]>o<ver to open a Road from Camden y?
the Fork as a Canal from Columbia to
Uranhy ? In neither case is th^Hrst Act
imperative, although, fitrflap* some Re
solution ot five or six years standing may
be found on the journals of the Legisla
ture ; however, it was before art appropri
ation was made, and ought to be of no
gi ore account, than various laws of the
same kind to fre fouhd on thfj; Statute
Book .
The previous paragraphs were writtet>
before the arrival of the last Telescope. lr.
ro^.Jy to tlft observations to be found in i;
6
we would observe that our complaint arose
| from its having been asserted, that "the
noi having a public Road above Camden
| had occasioned complaint." No allusion
of any kind has been made, except to the
Road to the Fork \ although', as we have
1 already observed, there is equal power to
'open that as to cut the Columbia Canal,
j As 10 the querulous pi agaraph succeeding,
we must be excused any notice of it, ex
cept to express our regret a? its tone and
ten* per. And, as to the use of the word
"Communication," it was done "inadver
tantly. Hence we take leave of the sub
ject by again referring the Editor of the
Telescope to w^at we have said on the
occasion j and, to assure him he is wrong
in classing the grievances of which we
complain as {% petulant and ideal." A short
lime will show them to be felt throughout
tfie Districts of York, Lancaster, Chester,
Kershaw and Sumter.
