A jury of inquest was held on
Sunday evening last, by Thomas
T. Willisson, Esq, on the body of
a Female negro, named Dinah, the
property of Mrs. Christina Hornshy,
. about four miles above Columbia ?
verdict, u That the aforesaid-Female
Negro Dinah, came to her death by
the violence of betting and b&i&ing
around the waist with a chain, inflict
ed by Christina Hornsby."
We understand that a murder was
committed in the early part of last
week, in Cheater district, on the
body of a Capt. George Brown, at*
tended with circumstances of no or
dinary atrocity. ?, It is said two per
sons came ta the house of the dee'd,
at pight ; the deceased met them at
> tbe door, and after conversing for
some time with one of them, lie v<as
forcibly dragged out of the house
nnd had hit lhroat cut from ear to ear.
It is presumed this appaling transac
tion owes its exigence to a settled
and long cherished revenge. We
learn that those whose duty it is to!
investigate the matter* are using
their best exertions to bring tbe per*
netnttors to justice. Suspicion is a
doat, but as yet, no satisfactory die
oovetfy has l>een made. j

Commanding Naval Officers ; Com
mandants of Navy yards, and the
Commandant of Marine*, requiring
them, respectively, upon receipt, of
the aaid circular, to pay the usual
tributes of respect to the memory of
the illustrious officer deceased. by
hoisting the Dags at half mast, firing
minute guns and causing the officers

his remedy for a certain considera

We learn from Springfield, Clark
couuty, (Ohio,) that a Silver Mine ,
has been discovered in the neighbor
hood of Mechanic ksburg, in that
state. The proprietor is said to be
a poor wan, ami made the discovery
by digging a well on his premises.

New- York, to abolish that feature
of the Constitution which comprises
the Council of Appointment. In
our estimation, this measure of
great importance to the political mor

to which, we should be glad to see
it prevail.
Since the publication of Adam
Smith's " Wealth of Nations," there
has been a gradually increasing at
tention to the great subject of Politi
cal (Economy, and it has happily re
sisted in the core or partial cure of
several inveterate errors of a perni
cious conseqnei?Ce. This is seen,
in one particular, in Lord Castle
teah's late declaration in the British
House of Commons, to wit : that
" the true interests of every country
was to throw w ide open its ports to
fthi unrestrained com merce of other
countries." Had that sentiment,
now greeted with general applause,

half a century back, there is no
doubt lie would have lost his place
