Military expedition to the Upper
Missouri. ? By perso* who V>vc
descended the river diiWt from Camp
Martin, we learn the following par
ticulars ?
On the 12th July the provisions
gave out at Camp Martin, and the
soldiers dispersed in small bodies
under the command of different offi
cers, to subsist themselves as they
could among the Indians and in the
woods. This camp was 370 miles
up the Missouri, and had been oc
cupied since last fall by a battalion
of the Rifle fegiment. Colonel
Johnson had the contract for supply
ing it with rations.
On the 30th July, Col. Chambers
with the remainder of the Ritfe re
giment was at Fort Osage, 30 miles
below the mouth of the Kansas,
waiting the arrival of provisions.
? ~Ott4he^lst July-4?7 is > Western
Engineer was 30 miles below For*
Osage, ascending.
The same day the advance of the
sixth Infantry in keel boats were ten
miles above the mouth of Grand
river. An accident had happened
among these boats. In a rapid part
of the river the conlelle, or towing
rope, broke ; the boat swung, and
drove dov. n the current until strik
ing a sawyer, it overset and weut to
the bottom. A soldier's wife and a
child were drowned ? Grand river
enters the Missouri &10 miles above
its junction with the Mississippi.
August 1. ? The foremost of the
steam boats, the Expedition, was
eight miles above Franklin (lioouV
Lick) lying too ancT repairing some!
of her machinery. ? The progress of
this boat up the Missouri, had ?<een
at the rate of eight miles a day !
August 2. ? The steam l>oat Join i
son , was thirty-live miles below
Boon's Lick, advancing. Her pro
gress had been at the rate of six
miles a day !
August 3. ? The steam boat Jeffer
son, was eight miles above the mouth
of the Great Osa^e, The great'
Osage enters the Missouri, 133 miles
above its mouth. The Jefferson
had therefore made 141 miles iui the
period of tllirty days !
The sentiment of the country,
from the day of the arrival of Col.
Johnson's steahi boats, was unanim
ous that these/boats were unfit for the1
Missouri. The truth of that senti
ment is now made manifest.
It is now certain that so much of
the expedition as depends upon the
progress of these feeble boats, will
not see the Council Bluffs this year.
That part, however, which may go
forward iu keels and barges may
easily arrive there.
Let no one attribute to the difficul
ties of the river the wretched pro
fress which Colonel Johnson'* boats
ave made in ascending it. Capt.
Nelson's voyage to Boon's Lick, in J
the Independence, is a proof of the
ease and safety with whicli it may
be navigated in a boat properly huilt.
of competent power, and skilfully
conducted., V j
^ ? Perpetual Motion.
This grand desideratum, the at
tainment of which the votaries of
science have uniformly pronounced
Incompatibly with the laws of mo
tion, is at length discovered by a
self-taught mechanic, a Mr. Foster,
of Owego in this state. A model
of it has betjn exhibited in this city.
There can be no deception in it. It
is perfectly simple, as are all the>
laws of motion when understood. ?
It is principally performed by the
agency of tw?j wheels, and tliese,
in the model exhibited, are each
aiiout six inches in diameter. One
has 35 buckets, similar to those of
the water wheel cf an overshot grist
mill. The oth< j* has 8 of what we
will call buckets. This latter wheel
revolves nearly five times a a fast as
the other. The motion is given by
little balls of lead, about the size of
buckshot, which are raised, one at
a time, by the latter wheel and thrown
into the former, in such manner th
one ball is thrown into each of i??
buckets. The weight of ihe ball
tytjp the wheel, and, as they de
'scencl to its lower part tbey roll on(
into the other wheel, where they are
caught, tn one of its buckets, anil
quickly carried up and thrown into
the first mentioned wheel. To the
machine is added a sawgate in mini
ature, which makes about 150 strokes
in a minute. It is believed that with
wheels of, say, 20 feet in diameter,
and halls of, say, 500 pounds each,
a force would be acquired sufficient
to turn a run of mill-stones. It is
believed that this invention is emin
ently calculated to benefit the world,
and must immortalize the name of its!
inventor. Albany Plough Bay .
