POETRY. OLD BACHELORS By a Lady. Old Bachelor* are hateful things, Which ought to be despised ; With heart*like broken fiddle strinegs, And just as little priz'd. -Jntun'd to love's soft thrilling touch, No pleasures do they know t They feel not, and they taste not much Of happiness below. The joys of wedlock, which they spurn, With all its numerous cares, K'en for a year, should love's lamp burn, Is worth an age of theirs. Was't but for them, the human race Would soon be swept away, And even earth?to their disgrace. Would tumble to decay : The social bond, that bond so sweet, Where heart and soul unite, Where friendship, love and union meet, Would sink in endless night. But 'tis in vain for me to prate, I cannot make them clever; Old Bachelors I always hate, ^And must, and thrUl for ever. AMUSEMENT. Home lime before the breaking up of the British Head-Quarters at Cam bray, an Irish soldier, a private in the ?3d regiment of foot, was con victed of shooting at and robbing a French peasant, and was in conse quence senta&cqd to be hanged. Ou arriving at tto place tff execution, he addressed the spectators in a S ten to rian voice, as follows?"Bad luck to the Duke of Wellington! He1# no Irishman's friend, any way. I have killed many a score of Frenchmen by his orders, and when I just took it iu my head to kill one upon my own<xccount, by the powers he has tucked me up for it!" Anecdote.?W. and C. two auc tioned, were remarkably dispropor tioucd in stature.?C. was a mere dwarf, and W. very?tall. At a public sale, G. mounted a hogshead, partly filled with Scoth snuff in blad ders, which stood on one end. As he was relating one-and-ten, one aud ten, going, going, going, gen tlemen, the head ^ave way,-and C. descended out of sight. Gone, says W.; and the sneezing of C. left no doubt of the fact; for though out of sight lie was not out of heuring, the effect on the crowd, was indescriba ble.?Jm, Mag. _ ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Mrs. W walking on one of the wharves in New-York, jocosely asked a sailor why a ship is always called $ke; 44 Oh faith," says the son of Neptune, " because the rig* ging cost more than the hull." Doctor South.?When he resided at Caversham in Oxfordshire, was*, one very cold winter's morning, call ed out of his bed to marry a couple who were waiting at church. lie hurried on his habiliments, aud went shivering to the church; but seeing only an old man of seventy, aud a woman alxmt the same age, asked his clerk in a pet, where the bride and bridegroom were, and what those old folks wanted ? The old man re plied, that they had i oine there to l>e married. He looked sternly at the~% and exclaimed,?" Married /" " /vs, married," said the old mail, hastily,"better marry than Ho worse " (>et you gone, you silly old fools," s* id the doctor,?"get home and do your worst" And then hobbled out of the church, abusing his clerk, for disturbing him on so silly an occa sion. iMr. Clay and Joseph Lancaster. Air.Laucastet's 1-cctuics at W ash ington liave received that approba- \ tion, to which, as* a public beuefac- j ? or, he may justly claim. At the ] conclusion of one of liis lectures, in liie House of Representatives, Mr. Clay complimented him iu hand some terms, observing that the Chair * , le occupied had never beeu as weU ? illed before. Mr. Lancaster, rood- j estly disclaiming the merit imputed to him by the Speaker, said, in ef ect, that man in his purest aspect was but a very humble instrument of a Higher Power, and that the chair le had just occuj>ied, exalted as it was, had not been filled by any thing better than Clay. Am. Watchman? ? The Speaker's Chair, from which Mr. ?ancauer Lectured. Comets and Women.?Comets I doubtless answers some wise, and ^ood purposes in the creation ; so do women. Comets are incomprehen- | sibly beautiful and eccentric; so are women. Comets shine with peculiar 1 splendor, but at night appear most spendid: so do women. Comets are enveloped with a lucid nebula, ( through which their forms are visibh ; so are those of women through their light and elegant attire.?Cometscon found the moat learned, when they attempt to learn their nature ; so do women. Comets equally excite the admiration of the philosopher and of " the clod of the valley," so do women. Comets and women are therefore cloaely analogous, but the nature of each being inscrutable, all that remains for us do is, to view with admiration the one, and almost to adoration love the other.
