The following remarkable fact oc
curred 011 the &*th nit. at Westbury,
in the county of Charles city. A ue
gro man descended-into a well for
the purpose of removing some ob

?d iu and tilled within six feet of the
ton. Ho soon*as the manager wajj
informed of the occurrence, he riet
about removing the bricks and earth,
and continued the operation so long
as a hope remained of saving the ne
groe's life, having a due regard fur
the safety of those employed above.
Early on Friday morning he went to
the well and called to the niaii below.
Satisfied that.be heard a voice, he
again set about clearing the wel, and
assisted by negroes from the neigh
boring "farms, he succeeded in the
evening of that day 111 extricating the
slave, after having remained under
the ground for two days and one
ijight. lie came up very little injur

A traveller recently returned

>f' Jerusalem is now in the most
Ipplorable state. Its population
varcely amounts to twelve tho :sand

sepulcre, and allow no one to enter,
who does not pay before hand for
his admission. Every stringer is
obliged to pay 18 francs for every
visit which pays to the sacred

If the following instance of most
barbarous incarceration was not co

as ihe Mercantile Advertiser, we
-uould deny its credit. We had no
idea that atrocities so horrible could
be perpetrated in any part* of this
enlightened country, under the name
of law and the pretence of justice ;
