The following letter from Gen. Bennett,
Commanding this Post, was addressed
to John E. Carow, Esq., in reply
to an application made to the military
authorities for the surrender of the jail.

tbe receipt of your communication o(
this date, informing tno that in compliance
with the proclamation of Gov. Perry,
you desire to resume your duties as
Sheriff, and take possession of the jail,
now in the hands of the military authorities.
1 would respectfully inform you that
any attempt upon your part to exorcise

it by my superior officers, under
v hose immediate orders I am serving.?
Should the Proclamation referred to
above l>e genuine, and its policy sustained
at Washington, I have no douut that
ihe military authorities in this Department
will receive instructions for their
irnidance in the effort which the Government
is ru iking to restore the State to

Acting Assistant Surgeon, U. S. A.,
whose residence was Martinsborg, N. V.,
reported to the U. S. A. Hospital at this j
place for duty in April last. In May lie j
was sent to Floiida to attend to t!ie An- j
dersonville prisoners, who came ;.uto our i
lines at Jacksonville. Shortly after he
returned to the hospital, and about the !
middle of July was taken sick and died 1
in nine days after.
The mystic charity of the time-honored
fraternity of Masons follows its
members everywhere. It {lines of prosperity
you see but little of it, but no I
sooner does adversity overtake one of its |
members, than the helping hand of an j
affectionate brother is thereto alleviate'
suffering and smooth the pillow of the J
dying one.
Dr. Bradisii was buried on Monday,
the 81st of July, by the Masons of Hilton
Head. S. C. About seventy-live j
were present The obsequies of the fraternity
were conducted by Brother S. L.
Haruts, Chaplain U. S. A., and were)
beautiful and affecting. The corpse was !
placed in a metallic cotfin and deposited !
in tin; llaynard tomb on the l'ope plan-;

shooting deer and duck, on the Hunting;

removing a gun from the pilot-hoase, i
holding it by the muzzle, the trigger!
caught in the cushion, and the entire j
charge of heavy duck shot entered his
arm at the wrist and came out at the el-1
bow, tearing away the fleshy part of his j
arm iu a terrible manner. He was taken |
at once to Beaufort, where the wounds
were dressed, and thenoe to the U. S. A. j
Hospital at this place. It was at first'
thought that amputation would he ne- j
