K. < The following, from the neighborhood of Pnootaligo, S. was sent ti8 by a Captain in the dOth 1*. S. C. T.; who rereived it from some one attending the celebration. The Captain adds* in a private note to us: " 1 trust the 'fecundity of a Southern iliuiute' may extend its iutluence to tho soil?resulting in rich harvests; so that the daily, elauiorou* applications fur radons may 'grow snowi by degrees, ami encouragingly less: " "The morning was fine, ami the day warm; yet, notwithstanding the heat of the weather, a number of citizens, both male and female, assembled at Clifton's Mills, near Whippy Swamp, to commemorate the Independence of 1776. It was easy to perceive that great changes had taken place during the past four years. Before the war all snoh meetings were attended either in carriages or on horseback; but now nearly all were pedestrians. These reverses of fortune, although fresh in the memory of the people present, did not overcome the hilarity for which our people were always remarkable. It is somewhat singular, indeed, with what facility the Southern people can accommodate themselves tc a arying circumstances. If we could not obtain a Confederate independence, wt have how exhibited the fervor, and expressed the sentiments, of Federal Re * publicans. L.1KC Wise people, WC Iiu uui brood over our calamities in mood; silence; but. with cheerful aptitude anil manly resignation, look forward to better times. "Polyhymnia and Terpsichore were well represented; and it was something more than romantic to see the formei slave (now a free man) playing the fiddle, while his heretofore master and mistress danced with seeming buoyant spirits. " After Sherman's conquering army passed through this vicinity, some might suppose that for months after no provisions could be procured for a Fourth oJ I uly dinner; but they who would think so, were ignorant of the fecundity of a Southern clime. ' Tlio* cruel war destroyed our ample store. The fields and forests will afford us more. " The day passed oft' with social hilarity; and all nturned to their homes, well pleased with themselves and everybody H. C. L>." * HEADQUARTERS, Deit. of the soi-th, | Hilton Head, S.
