is out on the Gth of Miy?for Edisto it

have been prisoners of war and are on furlough
or in rendezvous, except those lor the Regular
Army, will likewise be honorably discharged. j
Oificel s, whose duty it is, under the regulations
of tin; service, to make out rolls and other final
papers connected with the discharge and payment
of so'diers, are directed to make them out
without delay, so that this order may be carried
into etrect immediately.

Tenth.?The Commissary of Prisouers will have
rolls made out of the uame, residence, time and
place of capture, and occupation of all prisoners
of war who will take the oath of allegiance to the
I'nited States, to the end that such as arc dis- j
posed to become good and loyal citizens of the
I'nited States, and who are proper objects of Executive
clemency, may Is- released u)s>n the
terms that the President shall deem fit and consistent
with public safety.

Ac., at Greensboro, and any Commanding Otticer
of a Post may receive the arms of any detachments,
and see that they are properly stored and

General Schofield will procure at once the necessary
blanks and supply the other Army Commanders,
that uuifornut) may prevail; and great
care must be tukeu that all the terms and Stipulations
on our part be fulfilled with the most scru- I
pulous fidelity, whilst those imposed on our j
hitherto enemy be received in a spirit becoming !
a brave aud generous army.
Army commanders may at once loan to the inhabitants
such of the captured mules, horses,
wagons and vehicles as can be spared from immediate
use, and the Commanding Generals of
Armies may issue provisions, animals, or any i
public supplies that may be spared, to relieve j
present wants and to encourage the inhabitants j
to resume their peaceful pursuits, and to restore f
relations of friendship among our fellow-citizens
and countrymen.
Foraging will forthwith cease, and when neces- j
sity or long marches compel the taking of forage, j
provisions, or any kind of private property, com- j
pensation will be made on the spot, or when the ]
disbursing officers are not provided wiili tunds. j
vouchers w ill be given in proper form payable at |
the nearest military depot.

Bennett's House, near Durham's Station, X. C.,
between General Joseph E Johnston, Commanding
the Contederate Army, and Major General W. (
T. Sherman, Commanding the Unit d States Ar- \
my in North Carolina.
All arts of war on the part of the troops under
Geueral Johustou's command to eease from this
date. Ail arms and public property to be depos-!
ited at Greensboro, and dehvered to an ordnance
otticer of the United States Army. Bulls of all
officers and men to be made in duplicate, one
copy to be retained by the Commander of the
troops, and the other to be given to an officer to i
be designated by Geueral Sherman. Each officer
and man to give his individual obligation 111 writing
not to take up arms against the Government
ol'the United States until properly released from
this obligation. The side-arms of officers and
their private horses and baggage to be retained
by tlieui.
This being done all the officers and men will be
permitted to return to tiieir homes, not to be disturoed
by the United States authorities so long
as they observe their obligation and the laws in :
force where they may reside.

Here ifter, no private buildings, except such as
are abandoned or confiscable, will be used lor
military or Government purposes within this
Department. It is believed that there are, at all
the Military Posts, sufficient public buildings
and abandoned or confiscable private ones, to
answer all the needs of the se rvlce. The use of
"buildings owned by loyal persons subjects the
Government to claims for rent, and thus becomes
an unjustifiable source of expense.
Each Post and District Commander will forthwith
report to these Headquarters, all buildings
used by himself or the officers of his command,
with full statements of the location and size of
such buiidiugs, the number of rooms in each,
and the name of the owner or owners, with such
information as he can obtain as to their residence
and loyalty or disloyalty.
