HOW THE DAT WAS OBSERVED IN THE CAMPS XD
ON THE PLANTATIONS?A F STIVAL ATFOBi PCL \SXI?THEATRICALS
AT BAY POINT?SERVICES AT
BEAUFORT, &C.
Laot Thursday, appoint d by Gen'l. Saxto.i as
' a day of thanksgiving, was generally observed
throughout the Department. Divine services
were held in the churches at i.eaufor , and upon
the plantations the negroes ab tained from all
work and ottered up thanksgiving to God for
his manifold mercies In the camps all drills
werg dispensed with, and after morning services
the why was ma !e one of feastiug and hilarity:
quantities of poultry were purchased from the negroes
for the occasion and the savory incense of
roast chicken arose from many a caiup fire and in
some instances plum pndHings were attempted
which appruache 1 as near the original home-made
article as the means at command would ,.dmit of
Gen'L. Saxt n accompanied by Mr. Lee, the paymaster
of laborers on plantations took occasion
to visit the several plant tions on St Helena
Island to see that the day was properly observed
there and also to converse with the nesnroes and re
mind them of their exceeding cause of grat tndc
and thankfulness to God, for delivering them froiu j
bondage. At .-ay Point part of ,he 3d Kliod-I

in the evening, which was wvil attended.
The programme consisted of three pi .-cet>

splendid fete given by the oificers of the 48th New

A Steamer will leave tne wiiarl at liLton Head to !
convey guests to Fort Pulaski at 'J o'clock, Thanksgiving ;
morning.
The Str. Cosmopolitan left here at 9] o'clock, for 1
the fort, conveying to the scone of festivity Gen'l j
I 1 erry and a crowd of prominent officers, together I
! with quite a number of ladies. The steamers Mat
tanno and Boslo, fo lowed w h guests trow be u-1
tort, among theiu Jen'l. Branuan nd a p rtiou ol
[ his staff. The guests were greeted at the dock,
with pi asant music from the excellent band . 1 the
i regiment and marched in liny to the fort, u hich
fired a salute of thir een guns in honor of the generals,
as the procession entered. The interior w .s
neatly decorated with greens, arranged in circles,
| stars and fes oons, and presided a very pretty appearance.
The guests were received by Mrs. barton
tno amiable lady of the Colonel, who e presencegreatly
enhanced the charm of theoceasio ,and
| to whom with the other ladies residing at the Fort
s due in a grca measure the completeness of the
' arrangements. The games <th?k place upon the
terreplein and were observed by the guests from
the r.anpa.ts, which atf< tried a full and complete
view of everythi g whi h tra spired. The scene
was very striking, the massive walls surrounding
the space recalling to mind the a icient arena ot

at length upon the detiils of this part of the ente tainruent,
we shall theref re merely notice the
uiore interesting and amusing features. The
games inside the fort commenced with the foot
race which was watched with great interest and the
fortunate victors rewarded with the se\eral i lizes
a id enthusiastic applaus . .Next in order came
the Hurdle sack race which created intense merri-1
meat. Haifa ?>cen competitors were tied in sacks !
with nothing b t the head visible and with their
pedal extremities thus trauielled, they were required ,
to run i race a d jump over two hurdles. The al>- ;
surd inetho 1 of locomotion and the utter helplessness
ol those who were s un/ortu atoas to lose their
balance and tumble uiytf, elicited shouts ot laughtor.
The wbeelba|^HBat also insulted iu very
laughaole blundJ^^Hne competitors for the
priz were all bliffl^^fiCT ami placed directly iu a
line with a certain point, the one coming nearest J
to tbe goal being the victor the fun of theautmr
consisted in tlir-ir deviation at every itnagina-:
bio ang e f. i m a straight line, sobe.ly trotting j
along with the barrows, under the pleasing impression
that they were mak ng straight tor the goal?
of course the man who was farthest away was
greeted with shouts of derisive applause, and incited
to further efforts by assurances of victory.
The meal feat w s perhaps the most ludicrous feature
of the whole The hands of the negroes competing
for the prize were tied behind them and
they were required to take a nve dollar gold piece
from a tub of meal with the mouth. Til ludicrous

than describ d. They were very earnest
in thei search, and it was amusing to see he anxious
looks of those standing by, lest the on ? with
his head buried in the meal shou d e successful
and they cheated of their turn. 'I he third one
succeeded in obtaining the pr z and was so elated
wi h h s success that he was led into a saltatory
nianitestation of the exuberance of his ji,y, an i i
capered ro nd the tub of meal in real Geo. i hristy
style. The Burlesque Dress Parade which was got
up ent rely by the privates and carried out exceedingly
well, was a good termination to the comic ;
features of the programme. The uniforms were 1
grotesque in the extreme, wl.i e the orders and tnaneuvres
of the battalion were b th original and ridi I
culous. The occasion was take.i advantage of by
the men to make some good-natured hits at the
officers in the general orders which, notuithstand- :
iug their local char cter, seemed to be caught and [
appreciated by all. The games went off with

A bountiful lunch was provided and partaken of JEfr
of by all during their progrea^. Generals Brannan
and Terry b th left early in the evening, and
with t.iem many officers and several ladies, still
there were many left who incoherently expressed a
determination to see it out and ' not go home till
morning, till daylight did appear."
In the evening the steamer Flora arrived from
Beaufort, bringing General Eaxt n aud a bevy uf

at 8 o'clock. Three casemates connecting by door*
ways, formed the ball-room, which was handsomely
dec. rated with festoons of evergreens and *
bunting. The regimental and guard colors weie
also astefully distributed around the wall . Excellent
music as furnished by the band of the 48th,
and the dancing continued till 11 o clock, when the
guests were u hered into the supi>er room, a tent
160 feet long, the interior of which was beautifully
adorned with evergreens and palmetto leaves.
The table was really magnificent; boquets of flowers
in profusion set it ott', and produced a very
beauti u' effect. Considering the limited facilities
at command we are astonished at the complete

steamer Fl ra, but many still ling red and the festivities
were kept up till dawn We must not forget
to it ention the Rhode Island minstrel band,
which played at intervals during the evening.
Their performances, which took place in the quarte
s of Co. G, 3d i.hode Island regiment, were
very good and witness d by a crowded audience.

da,-. \\ e are sorry to say that the enjoyment of
he o casion was somewhat marred by the long and
tedious delay in : etting oft' the next day. The
steamer wh ch ought to have left for Hilton Head
early in the morning was delayed until afternoon,
and ? olom*ls, Lieutenant-Jolonels, Majors and
officers o every grade, who w ere all anxious to
return to thgir posts, were subjected :o an unnecessary
delay of more than h .If a day.
Since writing the above we have been put in possession
