Barton with his force was toraake a diversion in our
favor at Coosawhatchie, and, if possible, burn the
Railroad bridge at that place. A glance at the map
of this section of the country, will show how well
these plans were laid. Had they been successful,
(and they had every prospect of being so,) three
large gaps would have been made iu the railroad,
whl/h would hnvo r>rf?vi?nt*?d. for n. timo at lpaflt
rapid communication between Charleston and Savannah.
Although the expedition was not wholly successful,
still it is not barren of results. We have ascertained
the enemy's force on the line of the railroad,
and we have the proud satisfaction of knowing
that a small force of our brave men have marched
right into their midst, driving them from their
strong-holds?whipping them at every turn, and
-obliging them to destroy a bridge in their retreat,
to avoid pursuit and annihilation?thus virtually ac-.
knowledgiag our victory and their defeat. Our
troops behaved admirably all through, and their
conduct is deserving of all praise.
