Bethel church Sunday afternoon at
three o'clock.
Court Next Week.
The fall session of court of general
session and common pleas will convene
here next Monday morning.
There are several murder cases for
trial at this term, and some important
cases continued from the last
' term.

Mnrinh Association Meets.
The Moriah association met at Fork
Hill church Tuesday morning for a
two-day session. There were 7 7 delegates
enrolled at the opening session
and organization was perfected by
the election of Rev. T. A. Dabney as
moderator. W. L. Croxton. vice-moderator
and treasurer, and W. F. Estridge.

J. Thomas Amos Dead.
The older citizens of Lancaster will
regret to learn of the death of J.
Thomas Amos which occurred at his
home in Cheraw September 14. lie
had been in feeble health for sevumi
years. Mr. Amos was a resident of
Lancaster for a number of years,
being a photographer by profession.
He is survived by his wife and one
daughter. Mrs. Lena Amos Tillman.
Canudian Soldier to Spenk.
Lieutenant Mason, a Canadian soldier.
who saw several years service
in the great world war, will speak at
the courthouse square Monday at one
o'clock. Lieutenant Mason is a good
speaker and has had some wonderful
experiences which possibly will make
up the theme of his address. The
meeting will be in the interest of the
public health campaign to be launched
at an early date. Lieutenant-Colonel
Bates, of Columbia, will also deliver
an address and present a number
of medals to soldiers of this county
for distinguished service in the war.
Court will adjourn for the meeting
and it is hoped thata large crowd will
be present.

Mrs. Susie I'hillips was born December
10. 1883 and died at the home
of her mother. Mrs. M. J. Cook, In
this city. September 23. 1 ! 1H. Mrs.
I'hillips was a good. Christian woman
and was ready for her Lord when the
summons came. She was front early
life a member of Zion Methodist
church. Though afflicted for two or
three years she was always cheerful.
She is survived by her husband, Sidney
I'hillips; her mother and two sisters.
Mrs. R. A. Shehane and Mrs.
Eva Crenshaw, and one brother.
Vance Cook, all of Lancaster.
In the absence of the pastor, the
funeral was conducted by Rev. E. R.
Mason after which the body was laid
to rest in the cemetery at Lancaster.
May the bereaved ones be comforted
by Him who himself knew sorrow
and wept with those who wept and
who alqne ran romfort in such dark

The burial of the remains of Morris
Mcllwaine. who died at the Embarkation
hospital in Hobokon. N. J..
Monday, was held at Douglas church
Wednesday afternoon. Hev. Hugh II.
Murchison preaching the funeral.
The body arrived fn Lancaster on the
one o'clock train Wednesday and was
taken to the home of the young man's
narents near Douglas. There was a
large attendance at the funeral of
friends from the community and
also rrom Lancaster. The family received
a telegram of condolence from
the war department which stated that
young Mcllwaine came to his death
while on duty and through no act of
carelessness.

Monroe last Saturday, the details be^
ing similar to those In the ease of a
negro at Kershaw a week or so ago.
Thomas Wilson, a colored farmer of
Sandy ftldge township, is out the sum
of $506, the result of association
with a friendly but rascally stranger,
a member of his jwn race, in Monroe
last Saturday. The story runneth
thusly. Wilson brought cotton to
market, sold It, got his check cashed
and then met up with a strange negro
who told a wonderful story about
having found a purse containing two
one thousand dollar bills, found the
fat purse, the rascal said, out In the

world. Wilson says that the stranger
was liberal in his offer for accommodation
in the way of getting his one
thousand dollar bill changed in that
he propQsed to give the large bill for
five hundred dollars in smaller cur-|
rency. The policemen are looking for
the strange negro with the $506 wad
. but have not located him.

furnished inspiration for those who
cared to dance and the rooms afforded
ample space for the indulgence of
this pleasure, while progressive conversation
and other games were provided
for those who did not care to
dance. Refreshing punch was served
throughout the evening and near the
1 midnight hour delicious ice cream
jand cake were served.

established a motor sales agency in
Camden for the sale of Hudson, Essex

R. H. Bell, a young man of near
Kershaw, was taken into custody in
this city Wednesday, being charged
j with forging the name of R. L. Bell
to a check for $L28 and securing the
money. Of the amount $123 was re-|
covered. He gave bond in the sum
of $1,000 for his appearance at the
next term of court.
