Former Chief of Police J. E. Orr,
of Lancaster, has accepted a position 1
as chief of the Gastonla, N. C., po- '
lice. Chief Orr left this city some
time ago for Charlotte where he took
a position on the force as "plainclothes
man." He came here from ]
Charlotte three years ago and has
many friends In this city.

T. S. McManus, of Waldo. Fla., is
visiting his brother. C. L. McManus
this week. Mr. McManus Is a former
resident of Lancaster and a native of ^
Lancaster county. Ho moved away
from this city in 1889. however, and
for the past eleven years has been
residing in Florida. He says I.an- '

The new non-parking ordinance
passed by the city council is said to
'no the only one of its kind in captiv- '
ity. Gastnnia N. ('., however, is 1
running Lancaster a close second in *
this respect. The city fathers of that 1
town have recently passed a la v for-]
bidding jitney drivers "over 5<> in 1
number." from keeping their cars on I
any street inside the fire limits for <
a longer period than ten minutes. I
This action was taken." says a dispatch
from Gastonia, "in order to re-|
lieve the congestion prevailing on t
Main street, where most of the jitneys
now park " There is prospect ,
of Lancaster's ordinance being modified
in the near future so that cars j
may be parked on one side of the
'dock from Arch street to Gay street
and on both -ides from Arch to the t
