DRIED BLOOD IS EFFECTIVE I When Applying a Top Dresser Appll-' cation Should Be Made When Blades Are Dry. | The topdressing of small grain usu | ally adds materially to the yield.: During these times when the In-' crease in production is so vitally im-1 portant the proper use of nitrate of j soda. sulphate of ammonia or dried : blood as a topderssing for grain should prove very effective. At present prices the use of nitrate of soda and sulphate of ammonia should prov? most profitable, as they are consider- j ably cheaper per pound of actual nl-1 trogen man dried blood. The addition of topdressers to oaH has been particularly effective at the Coast Station: dried blood applied at the rate of 120 pounds per acre show | ed an average increase of 24.6 bushels 1 of oats per acre when applied in addl- j tion to 600 pounds of S 4-4 fertilizer . per acre; sulphate of ammonia at the Tate of 75 pounds per acre. 34.0 bushels increase; and. nitrate of soda at the rate of 100 pounds per acre show ed an average Increase of 20.7 bushels per acre. At the Tee Doe Station the use of nitrate of soda as a topdrosser for J oats, that had been fertilized at plan* ' ing time, applied early at the rate of 100 pounds per acre has shown an average Increase of 19.5 bushels of oats per acre, a late application of the Rame amount of nitrate of soda show i t d an average Increase of 17.0 bushels a per actfc: while double application f made at both times showed an aver- I j age increase of 22.0 bushels per acre f These results Indicate that an earl/ t topdressing at the rate of 100 pounds 8 of nitrate pf soda or its equivalent of ( sulphate of ammonia. 75 pounds, or ^ the equivalent of dried blood. 120 { pounds, will give most economical re- t suits. The early applications are made about March 1st. When applying a ( topdresser the application should be 1 made when the blades of the plants are dry to prevent scalding. Generally speaking, larger increases I are obtained from topdressers whero the grain has not been fertilized. T'nder this condition at the Coast Station 120 pounds of dried blood showed a sain of MS.8 bushels of oats. 75 pounds of sulphate of ammonia 45 0 bushels, and 100 pounds of nitrate of soda 39.4 bushels. However, the total yield Is generally greater when fertilizer is applied before planting and later a topdressing is used as Indicated. The use of topdressers seems to he more effective on light sandy soils than on the heavier phases. T. E. KEITT. The question of breed is largely a matter of personal preference, however. one should consider the popularity or demand for what he proposes to breed. Choose a breed that has proved a good one?there are several ?then select stock that are as true to type as you can get. Constitution is of vital importance. It is natural that animals of strong constitution have better appetites; animals that give the most economical and rapid gains are the ones that eat freely. Indications of constitution are large heart-girth and a broad, well hapnd head. Body capacity is .another essential, though It is very commonly lacking in hogs. Insist on quality which is Indicated by the hair and bone especially, and the general finish and refinement of tbe animal as a whole. When a boar Is to be selected, look for the points already mentioned and in addition select an individual that Is strong In masculinity and the characteristics of the breed he represents. There are several varieties of cotton that are resistant to cotton wilt and will produce excellent yields when planted on land infected with this dieease The best of these is the Dixie, which has been grown and bred for a number of years in co-operation with Hlemson College and the United States Department ot Agriculture. This seed 'an be had from the breeders and growers in the counties where wilt is causing serious loss. The Botany Division of Clemson College will be glad o put any one who needs seed in ouch with thess growers. Cotton anthracnose?(boll rot)? auses probably a greater loss in 3outh Carolina every year than cotton vilt does. Anthracnose can be conrolled by securing seed which are ree from disease and planting these >n land that has not been in cotton or one year. The best way to secure teed free from disease is to get them rom fields where there was no anhracnose. From the gate valve a one inch pipe extends downward and into a fifty gallon molasses or coal oil barrel. At the end of this plpo in the bottom of the barrel attach a "T" composed of one Inch piping. : The end of each wing of the "T" being closed with a tap.
