Tit VOL.23. NO. 30. SEMI-WE] McLAURIN WOULD jf ELIMINATE BOTH n Considers Election of Either Tillman or Blease Stupendous Blunder. HE MAY BE A CANDIDATE But He Does Not Say in Signed Statement Whether He Will Enter Race for Ciovernor in Coming Election. Hon. John I.. Mcl.aurin, former United States senator of South t'arolina, and who has been mentioned repeatedly as a probable candidate for governor in the coming election, pave a signed statement to The Charlotte Observer Monday, in which he declines to say that he will he a I candidate for governor, rather elim- are Inating himself from the race by de- woi daring that "Whoever Is elected a p governor will necessarily have to ?. line up on one side or the other" of the "present factional lines" and |V1 "this I absolutely refuse to do." His statement in full is as follows: "I take this method of reaching the various people who by petition and letters have requested me to he- jjy come a candidate for governor. 1 promised them an answer during the present month. At this time I feel that I can perform a better service by announcing clearly my political views than by becoming a candidate (ii for governor. It is probable after I do that many who have supported me will not do so, and that eondi tions will make it best that I should j not run for oftlce. It is evident that factional lines are to be drawn in the senatorial race and. while I be- ; lleve that I could be elected by avoiding this issue, I do not want office on these terms. I have given the matter careful thought and 1 mi want everybody to know before hand ,,r(| just how I stand. In order to get the warehouse hill made a law I had to reckon w ith the veto power of i 1 Vl the governor and without the assist he; ance of the faction then in power I ,.I;, could not have moved a step. I have always recognized this obligation and do not Intend to forget it ' 1 I would like to be in a position ' while I yet have the mental and tor physical strength to further develop the state warehouse system bv lor establishing direct sale. I would also like to organize the machinery!''"' for state insurance. not only for; ft" cotton but for other property. I would like to see a budget system f0(j for appropriations so as to fix indi l)U) vldual responsibility for the waste at(. of tax money, such as is now going on in South Carolina. I have made S(.j( up nty mind, however, that I am n't ,.ra going to keep my mouth shut nor compromise my yonvictions for the paj sake of any office on earth. Should f I go on the stump this summer ! ' shall unhesitatingly say that I regard the election of either ex Coventor Mlease or Senator Tillman as ^ 1 a stupendous blunder. So far as the ' 1,1 state is concerned it will establish ' more tlrinlv than ever the nresont v '' factional linos, and whoever is elect- ,>0' ed governor will necessarily have to Mn line up on one side or the other This 1 absolutely refuse to do. "Outside of the local issue the consequences are more far reaching. The attitude of fJovernor Hlcase he- 1 fore the war has been bitterly hostile to the present federal adminis- ' ' '' tration. Kverybody who knows onl him understands his attitude to wards the questions relating to the war. and that he will go any length. ence he has power, to obstruct the policies of Woodrow Wilson. He is w bold and has great ability in certain 8,)i lines. His advent Into the senate ,M'r would greatly strengthen LaFol- ,n" lette and a 'little group of willful senators' who are doing all in their mo .rill " power lo hamper the conduct of a ' war upon whose result, depends the "ol future not only of America but of nn( mankind everywhere.
