of getting the South Carolina men to
recognize the rights of their women
to a voice in their government.
Mrs. Springs of Lancaster spoke
of the war work of the South Carolina
women, showing that their patriotism
was as great as any citizen
of the State.
Mrs. Evans of Spartanburg answered
the usual objections of
Southern men to giving the suffrage
to the women by federal enactment
and pointed out the apparent lack
of sincerity in men suffragists who
did not work for woman suffrage in
the State and yet would refuse it to
women by the federal route.
The women were listened to with
earnest attention by the senators I
and congressmen.

COLUMBIANS HELD ON
COUNTERFEITING CIIAIUiE
Columbia. Dec. 20.?Rufus Shannon
and his wife. Mattle Shannnon,
both of prominent family connection
in Richland county, and William
Waddell. alias Wirtmore Waddell.
have been arrested here by secret
service operatives on a charge
of counterfeiting. Mattie Shannon
and Waddell are in the county jail,
while Shannon is in a local hospital
where he was taken recently following
injury in a street car accident.
A supply of metal, dies, molds, sandpaper
and other paraphernalia for
making counterfeit nickles and dollars
was found in the house occupied
by the Shannons, according to
the secret service men,
CATAWBA FROZEN FOR
FIRST TIME SINCE 18HO
Rock Hill. Dec. 20.?This is the
coldest spell of weather Rock Hillians
have known in years, as is attested
by the fact that the Catawba
river froze over. A solid sheet of
ice spanned the stream from Saturday
until Monday. Th's was caused
in part by gieat floes of floating ice
jamming against the railroad trestle
and backing up the stream for a
mile or more. While the surface
was hard, the ice was not thick and
no skating was possible. The last
time the river lias been frozen over,
older residents state, was in 1880.
