Both Sides Had Prepared for H Offensive and Double Attack Surprised Each. British Front in France and Bel- j gium, Aug. 21.? (By the Associat-| " i N Ied Press.)?The fierce battle which n began at dawn today on the outskirts w of the city of Lens continued ii throughout the day at close quarters ^ and late this evening there was no i ^ diminution in the intensity of the I struggle between the attacking Ca- n nadians and the Germans. | k The Canadians this morning j fought their way forward with j h a bombs and bayonets and occupied ^ Important enemy defenses north, ^ northwest and southwest of the p heart of the city, and since then the ? Germans have been sending in wave w after wave of infantry in doperate i ^ counter attacks. ! j, The Canadians have held their , gains and the Germans have suffered L very heavy casualties, as they must c have expected from the nature of s | their counter thrusts in which no v thought is given to the cost in life. ? Double Offensive. y The striking feature of the battle e lies in the fact that the Germans also had massed troops for a counter v attack at dawn against the newly' g I acquired Canadian positions in the J a northwest environs of Lens and had c actually started their advance when they were surprised by encountering the onrushing Canadians in No Mans a Land, lloth offensives had begun at fi the same hour, but a heavy mist ap- n parently made the Germans una- ti ware of the Canadians' preparations 11 until the Canadians were upon them with the bayonets. ti ' Brief but bitter lighting occurred ti in No Man's Land. The German of fleers tried to rally their meu. but ; the enemy infantry gradually fob' back to their trenches. The ('ana- i s; dians rushed forward and leaping a on the parapets, hurled masses of ! 8 bombs down among great numbers ! a of troops which had been collected ' for the attack. The Germans tried to flee through the communication trenches but the Canadians jumped among them with bayonets and bombs, killing many. Considerable Advance. The Canadians took up new posts s to a depth of several hundred yards. n which they are holding against bit- t( ter counter attacks. i * On the southwest the Canadians I ? were equally successful after very 1 heavy fighting, in which the British c artillery was brought into play. * The most strenuous fighting late in the day was proceeding in the a center of the line west of Lens anil ' on a little front near the left of the * I northwest positions, but the whole r line was a seething caldron. 8 Immediate Objects Achieved. n The Canadians have achieved their immediate objects by drawing their lines stilI closer about the henrt of the city and their goal unless the 8 German counter attacks succeed. R By today's attack the Canadians have gained possession of many railway embankments and coliery siding 1 which afTord excellent positions for a either offensive or defensive opera- 11 tions. The Canadians' assault extended northfward uluisssraramahassununp northwest of the environs of the city J to positions In the southwest suburbs and as the Germans were already advancing to attack the new Canadians defenses the fighting (j quickly assumed the character of one , f of the most ^sanguinary conflicts t which the battle-scared theatre has j o * seen. % d A circular line around which the;/ > ' opposing forces now are fighting is | f( drawn close about the city proper. J |i where the Germans had fortified a themsolves In concrete cellars and t dugouts. ' r No estimate of casualties or pris- J oners is yet possible, but captured f Germans were beginning to arrive'd back of both fronts at an early hour, d i?9ft Inw-Wpllli IM- *?u?i ?H'l " HE LANS 11-WEEKLY.
