1 SENATE PASSES VERY IMPORTANT
AMENDMENT.
Provides for Employment of All
Necessary Measures to Stamp
Out Pest.
Washington. Feb. 12.?The senate
has just passed an amendment of
importance to the cotton interests of
the South, by which it Is hoped to
control the ravages of the pink cotton
boll worm.
It is provided that to enable the
secretary of agriculture to meet the
i emergency caused bv the existence of
the pink boll worm of cotton In Mexico,
and the movement of some BOO
'carloads of cotton seed from the invested
districts in Mexico to milling
points in Texas and elsewhere, and
to prevent the establishment of such
insects in other places by providing ,
for adequate inspection and for the
employment of all means necessary
under rules and regulations to be
I prescribed by him. to prohibit the

from Mexico into the United States,
including the examination of baggage
| and railroad cars, there shall be appropriated
$50,000.
1 It is also provided tliut mills may
1 be Inspected anywhere in the United
States where Mexican cotton has been
taken; the secretary of agriculture
'may supervise the destruction of
isuch seed and the thorough cleanup
of the mills and premises. He may
also conduct local surveys and inspections
of cotton fields in the vicinity
of such mills and ports of entry
in order to detect any instances of
local infestation. Further he determines
and conducts such control
, measures as may be necessary to
'stamp out such infestation.
This is one of the most far-reaching
and important matters of tbw
5 kind ever before considered by the
I I Tederal government and practically
places every cotton field, storage
/ | warehouse and cotton mill in the
United States under the direct con'
trol of the United States department
