Message Telling of Craft Re- A
ceived at Custom House and
Hritish Consulate.
Savannah. Ga., 'Oct. 10.?The presence
of a submarine off the Georgia n
coast this morning was unofficially t
reported to custom house authorities? t
and the Hritish consul at Savannah.it
Up until a late hour tonight no offi-|t
cial report of the presence of the un- I
dersea boat had been received. c
The submarine was reported as being
on the offensive side of Martin's
Industry lightship, 15 miles north- (
east of Tybee bar. Neither the ^
British consul nor custom house authorities
would state where their in- 2
formation came from, although j
stressing the fact that It was entire- 5
ly unofficial.
Prom other sources, however. It Is
understood that the information ^
came in the form of a wireless message
from' a ship at sea, picked up J
here Monday afternoon. The message
was being sent to Charleston, it
is understood, and reported the sub- 11
marine, her decks slightly awash, *
apparently in waiting, as being off r
Martin's Industry lightship. Her
nationality could not be determined,
nor could it be ascertained whether f
she was armed, |y
Although the submarine was re- ?
ported some miles off the coast, marine
men pointed out tonight that r
the Georgia coast afforded several c
excellent places where an undersea f
craft might seek shelter and a place
of hiding. They mentioned Warsaw
and Ossabaw sounds, two bodies of (
water seldom frequented by other 3
pleasure craft. From either of these j
sounds a small craft could proceed,
further inland by the Wilmington
river from Warsaw and the Green j
and Ogeechee rivers from Ossabaw-. (
Several allied vessels are now in
port here and while their officers
acknowledge they are slow in load-;
ing they say that the submarine ac-i'
tivities will not prevent their deI
partu re.
