The fact that the business raei

To have good roads has becom?

mode of transportation. It is by
J this method that the principal
amount of interchange of goods and
farm products and intercourse between
city and country is to-day carried
on, and this method will coni
tinue in first place forever, even
with the development of steam and
electric service of the highest point
of efficiency.
Because this is true, the awakening
of the country to the necessity
of improving roads is not unreasonable.
Tito retailer has realized that
practical impossibility of roads during
the winter months is the cause
of the great falling off of his sales
during that period. In like manner
the condition of the roads have an
effect upon prices. Impassable roads
cause the price of farm products to
' soar because the demand is beyond
the immediate supply. When the
roads become passable attain these
. products are rushed to the market in
such quantities in the effort to sell in
the high market that the supply far
exceeds the demand and consequently
prices seek a low level. Itoth these
conditions do not tend to make good
business.
With improved roads such conditions
are minimized, for In nearly
any sort of weather the farmer can
reach the city without great inconvenience.
He can haul more either
in or out of the market, therefore,
his transportation eost is lessened.
With improved roads the hnslness
channels are kept more evenly filled
with commodities throughout all seasons
of the year than where the
roads are not improved.
