and was given a desk near the seni<
officers.
When the visiting director called i
the office a day or two later he gree
ed the former stenographer pleasant!
and congratulated him on his advano
ment.
"But there's no one around here wh
can operate a typewriter as you can
he added flatteringly, "and 1 want vo
to make a copy of this paper befor
I send It to my lawyer."
But the new assistant secretary wa
not to be flattered into a relinquist
ment of the dignity of his pcsitloi
and he replied:
"Really, Mr. Brown, I think that i

stenographer?"
"I beg your pardon." said Mr. Browr

Mottled Teeth Is Newest Disease.
Announcement of data on a recently
discovered unnamed disease of the
teeth, affecting only people in certain
localities, was made today hy Dr. Frederick
S. McKay of Colorado Springs,
Colo., before the Panama-Pacific dental
congress. Doctor McKay read a paper
written in collaboration with Dr. G. V.
Black of Chicago, who died recently,
and based on their joint research.
The disease, which was described as
a disfiguring, mottled or streaked discoloration
of teeth, was said to be epidemic
in several localities in the
Rocky mountain region, in a large area

Wet weather is an expensive summer
diversion, as the people of Kansas
have proved to their sorrow. The
state board of agriculture figures that
there was a loss of 17,000.000 bushels
of wheat during the month of August
from this cause. That means at least
$15,000,000 deducted from the state's
farm income and brings the Kansas
wheat yield below 100.000.000 bushels
The abandoned area is placed at 20
per cent of last fall's seeding, whereas
the loss in area figured on May 1 was
only 3.5 per cent of the fall seeding.

Deer With Glass Eye.
Abalardo Cooper of Salinas, Oal.,
while hunting in the fastness of the
San Lucia range, killed a four-point
buck that had a green glass eye in one
of its sockets.
Besides, the ears had been swallow
tailed, a common practice in marking
tne ears of cattle, and Its tail had been
cut off in some manner so that only a
stub an inch long stuck out.
It is thought possibly the deer was
a pet of one of the ranches down in
the Salinas valley, and when the "running"
season started the deer answered
the call of its mates and started
for the wilds
