The Methodist Church and Induration.

The Southern Methodist ehurct
has exerted a most powerful influ
ence in the South through its educa
tional Institutions. It has done f
great work, a pioneer work, too, ii
education, and is still doing grea
things in that line. Since its es
trangement from Vanderbilt, the fln<
university the church fostered for i
generation or more, it has not beei
discouraged in this branch of its ac
tivities, but has ratner renewed am
expanded its activities in the build
ing of two great universit ies, one ii
Texas and the other in Georgia
These institutions are now well un
der way and are receiving splendi*
financial support. They are all right
foo, and will be useful, but we have
often felt that, wli'le the Methodis
church is seeking these new fields fo;
investing great sums of money, i
might with good grace, and perhapi
even greater benefit, do more for tw<
great old instiutions of the churcl
of which we have some knowledge.
One of these is Wofford College
in this city, while the other is Emori
and Henry College, at Emory, Va
IJoth have stood the test of time
fighting the great fight. largel>
through the power and force of the
men who have been directly inter
ested in them. Both have rendered
great service to the church and to the
state; far greater service, perhaps,
than have the more flashy universities
into which the church has put its
millions, but they have never been
supported or recognized as they
should have been by the church of
the whole section.
These institutions have been faithful
in a few things?in small things
?and they should be made able to
evert the whole 501110 in'I nonce that
surrounds them over many and
greater things. Had the Southern
Methodist church, when it sought to
find an outlet for its educational
enthusiasm, following the experience
with Vanderbilt. turned to Woffonl
and Emory and Henry and made of
these line old colleges, which have
given the church th great majority
of its leaders, great universities, it
