opened Monday, September 27, with .
an enrolment of 156. Last year only
108 pupils were enrolled in this
school. An increase in attendance
has been made in all of the graded
schools of Lancaster.

that the doors at each end of the
school building have been changed
so that they now open from the inside
out instead of from the outside
In as heretofore. This has been
done to give better and safer exits in
case of fire or other emergencies.
The superintendent also contemplates
beginning the practice of fire drills,
by which means the building could
he emptied in little more than a
minute or so.

Miss Betty Brown entertained the
Girls' Bridge Club at a most enjoyable
meeting Wednesday afternoon.
Besides the eight members of the
club four other guests joined in the
games, making up three tables of
enthusiastic, players. Miss Nannie
Hill Moore scored highest and was

was won by Miss Laura Bartlett of
Mount Holly, N. C. After the games
a delicious salad course was served.

In spite of inclement weather Lancaster
was unusually active yesterday
in a social way. Mrs. M. S. Witherspoon
entertained at a pleasant
bridge party in honor of Mrs. J. L.
Flautt of Aurora, Mo., the guest of
Mrs. Leroy Springs. Sixteen players
enjoyed Mrs. Witlierspoon's hospitality
yesterday afternoon. The
guest of honor prize was a silver
single rose vase and the first prize,
won by Mrs. Ernest Moore, was a
deck of cards. Mrs. Leroy Springs
cut the consolation, a dainty handkerchief.
After the games, ices,
cakes, mints and nuts were served
by the attractive young daughters of
the hostess, Misses Elizabeth and
Mary Donnom Witherspoon.
Mrs. E. T. Hodges entertained the
Lancaster Chapter, IT. D. C.t at a
meeting, which though smaller than
usual on account of rain, was nevertheless
a very pleasant occassion.
Ten members were present. After
the regular business meeting the historical
program was taken up. It
consisted of a study of Jefferson
Davis. President of the Southern Confederacy.
The Chapter decided at
ims meeting to have a Silver Tea
next Friday afternoon, October 15,
from 4 to 6 o'clock, at the home of
Mrs. W. E. Taylor. The program
will consist of music and recitations.
The public is cordially invited to
attend. The hostess served daintv
refreshments.

of the birth of perhaps the most popular
man in the county, Sheriff John
P. Hunter. Notwithstanding the fact
that he has reached his three score
yenrs, he is still as active and energetic
In the discharge of his duties
as he was many years ago, when he
first became sheriff. He never loses
the trail of a fugitive from Justice.
He never quits working to capture
them until they are caught. In celebration
of his birtday he is Bonding a
deputy to Winston-Salem. N. C.. for
Johnson Benson, charged with larcency
from the field; and another
deputy to Huntavllle, Ala., for a
white man by the name of Brown
Simpson, charged with disposing of
pronerty under lien.
The Lancaster News unites with
his hundreds of fr'ends throughout
the county in extending congratulations
to the sheriff with the hope that
t*?e life of this useful and fearless
officer will be spared for many years.
