It la gratifying to know that ther has been but one case of typhoid ii Spartanburg this summer, and thi case, which developed during th past week, is being rigidly investi gated by the health department. Th' cause for this case will be found I possible, so as to guard against th< occurrence of additional cases. Then were 28 cases here at this time las year. The department of health hai been on the job all during the sum rner to keep the city's health recon excellent, and a large measure of it: success is attributed to the fact tha the people of the city generally hav< given more hearty co-operation ir carrying out the regulations and sug gestions of the department. This ii an Indication of the necessity of sup port of the efforts of the officials b> each and every individual. Keepitu well is largely a matter of educatlor in the matter of keeping everything absolutely clean. This law of clean liness should be rigidly observed lr and around every home. Weeds and trash should not be allowed to collecl on the premises, and all posslbh breeding places for flies and mosqui toes should be religiously destroyed The fly as a disease carrier is toe well known to bo allowed to live ai all. In the matter of health in the outlying districts where the sewerage does not extend is to comply strictly with the regulations of the healtli department with regard to surface closets. The regulation structuref should be used and then they should be cleaned regularly. The department will be glad to see that this '.s done. And what has been said with regard to health in the city is largely applicable to the rural community, Interesting and most satisfactory results have been obtained through the close attention to rules of health in certain "model communities." when health officials and experts have worked and these results show whal can be done to make the country even more healthful. After all Is said, the people whr live In a community are the real guardians of its health. Without theii aid the health officers can do little This fact is being sadly brought home to the city of Greensboro, which if now the victim of an epidemic of typhoid. Commenting on the report ol Dr. W. S. Rankin, secretary of the North Carolina board of health, whe asks why the life-saving health laws have not been enforced. The Greensboro News says: "Why, indeed? During the pasl four years, the secretary of the state board points out, Greensboro has had about 300 cases of typhoid fever, 01 some 10 a year. Fifty of the 3 00, 12 of the 80 were probably of epidemh origin. The other 380, or about years, have been caused by unsani tary conditions. "Where epidemics have made tar people sick and killed on person th< surface closets have made 50 t>) 6( sick, and have killed five or six," tin report says. The situation here as tr the closets Is 'far worse than th< dairy situation, and no comrnenda tion of the handling of milk ii Greensboro is intended in this state ment.' A e political meeting is, therefore, of importance, and being important, it B should be of highest respectability, f But why is it that women, as a rule B do not attend these meetings? It B is not wholly because they are not t interested in politics. The governB ment of a state rules the women . and the men, so women are more inI terested than one might imagine if 8 the judgment were formed merely 1 t from the numbers of women who i s are present at campaign gatherings. ! , wespite the importance of a govern-, . ment to women and to children, men j a are frequently unwilling for their J . wives and children to be present i f where there is a campaign meeting ? in progress. The reason for this is , easily found. In South Carolina the; r average political meeting is no place' . for women. It is not good enough t i for them. I Now a man may be the most vio- j I lent opponent of equal suffrage, but' 3 he will admit that a political meet-1 . ing, which is so closoly related to . the government, should be a place fit 3 for women. It is often said that the I polls are too dirty for women, and I men arguo from this that women ! should not bo g'ven the ballot. The i News is not espousing the cause of equal suffrage, but we can not but ? *ee that this is no argument against . it. If campaign meetings, and if ? voting places are unfit for women, it r is high time that some reform be ini stituted. If tho men wish to defeat 5 woman suffrage, tho best way to do * it is to institute the necessary reI ! forms. Women can make polls -1 cleaner places, and if men don't, the < women will strive to do so. One of < ; the reasons advanced for equal suf frage is that women would clean up politics. If the men do it first, there . will be no cause for the women to i come in. I It is not fair to women and cliilt! dren, it is not giving them the typo of government they deserve, when ! j men allow a continuance of dirty ' politics. A political meeting should i | be a place where dignity is seen. | The sense of propriety should de- 1 )|mnnd that there be no exhibitions:^ I which tend to lower the standard of j citizenship. Among all the resolutions, ora- ( ions and communications published hroughout the South concerning the1 landling of the cotton crop this fall, t remained for Mr. W. P. G. Harding if the federal reserve board to say he most sensible thing at the right ime. He says it in the current issue if the Federal Reserve Bulletin. It s well to repeat it here and profit by vhat Mr. Hnrding says. He is in a losition to speak authoritatively and lis views ought to have more weight han the vaporings of politicians and he hysteria of calamity howlers.
