KAY DAY FETE
A GREAT SUCCESS

May (juccn?May Pole Dance
Feature of Afternoon.
When the Mamie Frsier Society
f the Presbyterian church underlie
and successfully carried out last
ear a May Day Fete, with floats
oi>re?eiiiiug nits aiuereni ousiness
lterests of our town and the crownlg
of the May Queen, it seemed
uite an ambitious undertaking, but
ley have demonstrated that they
in pull off another quite elaborate
nd enjoyable afTair, which was
luch enjoyed by over 400 visitors
Wednesday afternoon. The spacious
iwn and grove around Judge Ernest
loore's home was the scene of an
nusually attractive entertainment,
he first feature of the affair was
le parade of decorated baby cariages,
as well as of handsome babies
r walking age. The Judges, all of
horn were out of town people, unanuously
awarded the first prize for
est decorated carriage to little
iartha, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
!. B. Roddey, the second prize goig
to the little Miss Harriet Stevens,
oungest daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Walter M. Stevens.
Another very elaborately decorat\
carriage was In the form of a
>vely white swan and in it rode the
alnty infant dauchter of Dr. niul
Irs. J. A. Winstead. Several other
eautlfully decorated perambulators
ere In the procession. Blue ribons
were given to the following
abies, viz: Nancy Hinson, daugh?r
of Dr. and' Mrs. E. J. Hinson;
ttle Margaret Bowling, daughter oi
Ir. and Mrs; John F. Bowling;
lartha Roddey and Harriet Stevens.
After leaving the judges deciding
n the winners of the Baby Show,
tie visitors' interest next centered
i the coronation of the May Queen,
he was preceded by two marshals,
Iessrs. Ernest Beaty and Julian
toss, a score or more little children
trewing rose leaves in her pathay,
then followed a dozen larger
iris with garlands of roses. Last of
11 the dainty little May Queen, the
nlversally liked and popular Miss
lary Locke Barron, grand-daughter
i snerin jonn r. Hunter, escorted
y the chief marshal, Mr. Frank
Ireen, and attended by hei
aalds, Misses Mary Heath Jones,
,ucia Murchlson, Pearl Coffey
'aultne Marlon, Katharine Wylie
nd Lallage Cauthen, who after the
rowning, which took place on an
laborately flower bedecked stand,
ang, assisted by the others, twc
ery pretty and appropriate songs,
ollowed by graceful scarf dances
xecuteJ by four little girls with
arlands of roses.
The brcss band of the Manchestci
Ulls In Rock Hill, dispensed lively
nd inspiring music during the
>'hole afternoon. Twelve children
f Miss Joe Foster's first grade in oui
lentral school then danced with ex
eptloual "grace and correctness, the
ttractlve May Pole dance. They
^ere followed by the dear little
ilndgarten kiddies, whom we always
love to see, in charge of theii
iopular and efficient teacher. Mist
'orlnne Jones, in their rendition ol
heir May Day dance.
The closing feature of the afterioon
was a dainty little fairy play
nutiea. "fjvery Day Fairies." well
cted by about a dozen little chllren
and Misses Lueta Murchlson and
lelen Mackey. The costumes were
ery well gotten up and the children
11 spoke their parts well.
Our enterprising new photograher,
Mr. Thackston, took several
lctures. in which will be commemrated
the various features of this
appy occasion and will doubtless bt

Rev. E. A. Thompson Writes of His
Work In the Ixtne Star State.
To the Editor of The News:
Having Just returned from a two
| months' stay in New Mexico, where
I have been in a number of great M
1 meetings, in Dead Man, Desmions m
1 and Maxwell City. We find in that
Ood's noblest people, who are filled
1 garden spot of the world, some of
; with the spirit and are running over
' with that noble portion of progresi
siveness, that is not to be found
everywhere. In speaking to an au- '
1 dience of three or four hundred peo*
pie, there were more than fifteen
L states represented, of which there
> were five South Carolinians. We ^
' had a great revival and many added i:
> to the churches, and many brought
> into the Kingdom of God and much i
1 ?ood accomplished every wav. vet !
| there is much to he done for the
Master in that part of our great
country. They come far and near
to hear the Gospel. In this multitude
of people, there is to be foun.l
of every class, men who are seeking
health, wealth, pleasure, and some
money, while we find a good many who
are seeking the lost. ^
| But some, like the Prophets of old,
and the blessed who settled and gave
to us this grand republic of ours,
[ those people forget not to build an
' altar unto God, as soon ns they
reach that good country, and in our
" various evangelistic churches we
have well organized Sunday schools
1 and many are graded. Young peo"
| pie's classes are well organized and
1 well attended, both in town and in
1 the country.
1 I will say that no state has richer
soil than New Mexico. The soil is
' from one to 15 feet deep, grain and
' cattle abound in the northern part
' of the state, the elevation being K
i ibout 10,000 feet above sea level, in
- full view of the snow-capped Rock"
ies. Cattle do well on this grass the
' year round without any feeding. The
past year has been New Mexico's
" greatest year for grain, hay and c
fruit, while sheep raising is one of V
heir best industries. 15

than ten miles away.
New Mexico, as I have said, her
soil Is rich and fertile, she abounds
in grain, hay. fruit, cattle, hogs,
sheep, and the houses are the best
to be found.
And In writing ,of the progresslvenose
of that gren't state and people,
we would not forget the most pro
