Mission Knlly.
A congregation which filled the
auditorium of the Presbyterian
church Sunday afternoon enjoyed
thoroughly the Home Mission program
carried out by the children of
the Sundny school. The church was
darkened and a single light gleaming
from a tall lighthouse cleverly
designed by Mr. John H. Poag, the
popular and efficient superintendent,
shone on the faces of the children
and also carried out the idea of the
"Light of the World," which was the
keynote of the program. A cho'i
of ten voices, accompanied by Mr.
Thomas Heaty on the organ and Miss
Mildred Green and Mr. R. M. McDermid
on the violin, made sweet
music. Then there were recitations
and responsive readings, as well as
other attractive numbers. Spring
) flowers were used In abundance and
added a pleasing decorative touch,
so appropriate to tho season and to
the occasion. The ouperlutendent,
^ Mr. Poag, and his competent teachers,
are to be congratulated upon the
success of the service.
"CINDERELLA" AT THE STAR.
Gave Pleasure to Old Folks as Well
m Children.
Among a number of good pictures
shown recently at the Star Theatre,
"Cenderella," the fanciful fairy
story, which Is such a favorite with
children, has been perhaps the most
pleasing. This was presented yesterday
with Mary Pickford In the
title role and her husband, Owen
Moore, as "Prince Charming." Both
of these movie idols are quite popular
with old and young and the set,
ting for tho play was charming.
Manager Parr is to be congratulated
upon tho presentation of this excel*'
lent picture.

the Girls' Auction Bridge Club Friday
morning and the members of
this club, as well as a few other
guests, enjoyed a pleasant morning.
After a series of exciting games,

ed the winner of the club prize, a :
deck of cards, and Miss Araminta
Holcombe of Danville, Va., the guest
prize, a bridge set. During the j
morning hours the hostess served an
elaborate salad course with tea.

Another very enjoyable affair of
the past week was Mrs. Hazel Witherspoon's
meeting of the Friday Af- I
ternoon Book Club. In the living
rbom of Mrs. Wltherspoon's home,
in which the club assembled, an interesting
discussion of current events
and a critical study of "The Tempest'
took place. When the literary
discussions were over, a helf hour In
lighter vein was enjoyed during
which delicious refreshments in two
courses were served. Master James
Witherspoon assisted in this pleasant
duty.

Mrs. L. C. Payseur's reception Saturday
afternoon in honor of Mrs.
Leroy Springs was the largest affair
of the spring season, and most
enjoyable. Mrs. T. M. Hughes
greeted the callers at the door and
her atetractiva young daughter and
namesake. little Miss Eugenia
Hughes, received the cards. The
hostess, wearing a handsome gown
of black lace over white, and the
guest of honor, lovely in an imported
white lace gown with touches of
pink, received with the following:

Jones, Mrs. T. Y. Williams, Mrs.
Hugh R. Murchison and Mrs. James
H. Thayer, each gowned in becoming
dresses of various pastel shades. In
the dining room Miss Annie Gregorv

Lucia Murchison and Laura Gilbert
| Williams pinned dragon flies of
every hue on the guests as they left
the dining room. In the hall Misses

served punch. Mrs. Ola 1'. Gutling
at the piano, accompanied by Mr. R.
M. McDermid on the violin furnished
music which added greatly to the
i pleasure of the guests. About fifty
women called during tlio afternoon
and enjoyed this charming affair
given by Mrs. Payseur, who is always
such a successful hostess.

Trophies From Catawba Meet.
The five Lancaster contestants
wjio entered the Catawba Interscholastic
Oratorical and Athletic
Contests, held at Rock Hill Friday
night and Saturday, brought home
a silver trophy cup, four medal?
and two third prizes. This is a rec- ,
ord of which all of us should bo i
proud.
