Damage Suit Being Tried in
Cheater.
The court at Chester has been engaged
this week in the trial of the 1
case of Walter G. Cureton, administrator,
vs the Lancaster & Chester
Railway Company. The plaintiff is
suing for damages growing out of
the death of his brother, Mr. Will A.
Cureton, resulting from fatal
wounds received at the Hooper's
creek wreck on the L. & C. Railway
on July 30, 1913. As we go to press
the case is not yet finished. Colonel
Springs and a number of other Lancastrians
have been in Chester for.
the trial during the past week.

Two Fires Last Night
Last night about midnight fire was
discovered in the building in the
Springs block occupied by the
Palace Market and the O. K. Barber
Shop. It is supposed that too much
gasoline escaped and overflower into
the burner, causing flames to drop
to the floor, which was burned for
about a foot. Bat for the timely arrival
of Mr. C. B. Cobb, who first
reached the plnce and succeeded at (
once in extinguishing me names,
the flro might have been a very'
aerlons one but Mr. Cobb dis-1
covered and put It out bo soon.
Another fire alarm at the early'
hour of six tnla morning awakened (
many of our citizens, who found
that the oil house near the L. & !
C. depot was In flames. The fire
department responded quickly and [
did Its best to save the building but
the fire had gained such headway ,
before It was discovered that the
building was practically destroyed, j

Death of William Polston.
Mr. William Polston, aged 38,
passed away at his home In the mill
village early Tuesday morning and
the remains were laid to rest in
Weetslde cemetery Tuesday at 4 p.
m, after funeral services conducted
by Rev. S. R. Brock. Mr. Polston
Is survived by his wife and four
little children.

of his comrades in arms, both hav- i 1

Mr. Powell had some thrilling
experiences during the war. acting r
most of the time as scout and sharp,
shooter. Not withstanding many j
close calls ho was only wounded ]
ranee, at the battle of Gettysburg. Ho
had the special honor of conducting
the remains of the commander
of his regiment, the late 1
Col. Dixon Barnes, from Sharps- j
burg or Antletown, Maryland, back 1 f
to Lancaster. Colonel Barnes was
shot in both legs in the battle of l
Sharpsburg and died shortly after-' I
wards. Mr. Powell also rendered \
valiant service in the trying days of i 1
'76. He bears his advancing years
with dignity and grace. His many j f
friends in Lancaster are glad to t

Mrs. John W. Sullivan, formerly
>f this county, passed away last Saturday
at a hospital In Columbia after
in Illness of several months. Mrs.
Sullivan was a daughter of the late
\nderson Bevor. who predeceased

pled to Mr. Sullivan about twenty. I
four years ago. For sometime ]

Hill. At one time she and her husband
kept the County Home and It
was always a pleasure to her to administer
to the wants of the inmates.
She lias never been forgotten
there. Mrs. Sullivan was 4 6

member of the Methodist church

would make any sacrifice for hor
children. She is urvived by her
husband, eight children. Mrs. Walter
Small. Misses Myrtle, Vadie,

Messrs. John Ij. and Dewey, also the
following sisters and one brother.

Cotton Congress Saturday.
