our bigotry is so horrible to me, hav- d
ing recently been reading about the b
v, Spanish Inquisition, that I cannot
conceive how any man In this en- c
\ lightened age can hold sucli a sentl- o
ment as there members of the Jun- o
ior Order of United American M<>- ti
chanics appear to hold. Such senti- b
ment certainly does no one any P
credit, and Is a part of a wave of P
bigotry against the Catholics, which 8
appears to have bee nexcited recently.
I know the state of South Caro- y
lina was settled by fugitives from v
Europe who tied from Catholic per- n
secution the Hugenots. I also know v
that many of the ancestors of our J
people cherish Intense hatred of c
Cathollcsism; but it is a fearful thing f
to me that such a feeling should y
still exist in our free and liberty lov- f
ing country. a

Visitor." a weekly Catholic publi/
cation. I presume to write you to
[ y say that in my small way I am de*
lighted to know that a man of your 1
national prominence, and who "does
not belong to any church at all," is
still broad minded enough to write
in an official capacity the kind of a J
letter that is printed in the clipping
enclosed It is a significant fact that
this liberal attitude is evinced in con- J
nectlon. not only with that govern
ment that we CatholicB are charged
with attempting to undermine, but
has to do particularly with a government
question concerning the rights
of those very same Catholics.
The Jnlor Order of United American
Mechanics show by both their
letters, and particularly the last, just
where they stand on the question of
religion in politics. There is no reply
to their second letter printed
in the "Sunday Visitor;" the letter
is its own answer.

May 30th. eBlng chairman of the
naval Jbommlttee. I neartlly favored
the Increase of the chaplains, but of
course I am not going to "defeat the
naval bill" on account of the increase
we have provided. I am astonished
that your order la ao bigoted
and narrow as to protest against
"priests in the navy." The chaplains
are examined as to their characters.

Secretary of the navy endeavors to
divide them among the denominations
equally or pro rata. I do not
belond to any church at all. and I believe
every man ought to be allowed
to go to beavon, or hell, his own
way. I have known some men who
were Catholics, and they were good
and true; and I honor such wherever
I meet them. My advice to your association
is to take a broader view of
life and not be so bigoted and narrow.
