At a regular meeting of ham-aster
Council, No. 38, the following
pledges was formally adopted and
signed:
Whereas. The Junior Order United
American Mechanics is founded upon,
and stands for. all that preserves
the religious, moral and governmental
welfare of the people, and,
Whereas, When we became members
of said order, we pledged ourselves
to stand for these essential
factors in the maintenance of the
highest liberties of the people; and.
Whereas, We are desirous of, and

fits for our fellow-men; and.
Whereas, We wish it to become
known that we, as an organization,
believe in, stand by, and will exert
ourselves for the furtherance of the
proper, impartial, and energetic enforcement
of those laws so essential
to the peace and prosperity of our
people; and.
Whereas, We regard the illicit
sale of whiskey, and all of the vile
concoctions sold as alcoholic drinks
by the lawless and dangerous class
of people, whether of high or low
degree, or of whatever race, commonly
called blind tigers, as one of
the most dangerous, hurtful, and
demoralizing crimes committed
among us; and,
Whereas, It is apparent to us that I
this crime is of common and daily II
occurrence in nnr rniinlv uhoroViv III
our citizens are not only debauched
and made drunken, to the disgrace,
dishonor, and detriment of themselves
and their families, but. as
shown by recent tragic events among
us, are actually poisoned to the
death by the vile substances Illegally
sold them as whiskey, one, at least,
of them being a member of our order;
and.
Whereas, Certain resolutions
pledging us as Juniors to the curtailment,
and, if possible, the entire
essation. of this crime was adopted
in regular meeting of the council to
which we belong;
Now therefore, we, the' members
of the Junior Order United American
Mechanics, do hereby pledge II
ourselves as follows;
First; Tbaf'we will not stand as II
~ \surety or bondsmen on the recog v
nizance of any one charged in the I
process of any criminal court with
the crime of selling whiskey, or any
other Intoxicating drink; Provided,
that if It appears to us that any such
prosecution is founded in malice,
and that the party accused has never
been under indictment for said offense
before, and three brother members
of this order in good standing,
shall agree with either of us that
the party accused should be allowed
ball then we may go on said bond.
Second: That we will not appear
as bondsmen for any person charged
with vagrancy, except on similar investigation.
Third: That we will aid and assist
all officers of the law in the en- I
forcement of the whiskey laws of
t^is state so far as the same may be '
v. itbin our power.
To all of which, we pledge our
honest endeavor and faithful sup
port.
Chief of Police II. W. Bell and
Magistrate John L. Cask^y were appointed
a special committee to pre- II
sent this pledge to all Juniors for ,
their signatures, and it Is now in
their hands.
At a subsequent meeting It was I
formally resolved that The Lancas- II
ter News be requested to publish the I
pledge and the resolutions Incident
thereto.
All Councillors are requested to
present the matter to their Councils II
with the end In view of having i II
p'mllar pledges adopted and signed It
by all Juniors of the county.
The committee especially charged I
with this work consists of II. Hines, II
W. F. Stoll, R. J. Hlnson, J. H. II
Polk, R. T .Belk, S. J. Boone and
W. J. Snipes.
