G "BIG BUSINESS" = APPLIED 10 EGGS? arc ! pci United States lias Largest I"' Hatchery in the World. the * ] wh MAMMOTH POULTRY PLANT *to in jl.| l'ai in at lloliiston, Ma>>*., Furnishes Kvaiuple ??r What Can l?e Done t ( With Poultry. ha I t he This is a day of "big business" and the It is as true in the poultry as in the nie manufacturing and commercial world, ma But few readers of The State are are aware that the largest hatchery in far tho world, with a capacity of incu- tor bating 1,000,000 eggs a year, is lo-'sca cated in the United States. It is a I ufa fact, and moreover, the parties who ant own this immense plant sold last year , to i 1000,000 day-old chicks. I the At Holliston, Mass., upon a j foo farm containing 150 acres, one of cul the finest in the State is where this j rail plant is located. White Plymouth ' imi Rocks will be used for breeding which | hoi speaks well for this grand represen- ! the tative of the best American owl that!que has ever been brought before the pay public. I lze This enlarged incubating farm is twe an outgrowth of one in Maine, which and will be continued as an adjunct to the ; ma! hatchery. To give this department two readers an idea of the immensity of the the plant, a few details are here and given. The incubating houses or eel- the lars as they are called, are each 34 oth feet by 127 feet, inside measurement, tire These two cellars contain three mam- the moth incubators each, the total ca- oth pacity being exactly 102.300 eggs at sta; one tlrr?. It is planned to run each ver incubator nine times a year in sue- and cssion on this basis. With the Maine will plant as an adjunct the number of .thir eggs incubated will reach over 1.000,- to ! 000, and the estimate is that 600n,0(>0 pen chcks will be produced each session, the; It is the belief of the proprietors that torn they will sell 300,000 day-old chicks j thai mis year, 11. is, nowever a pari o ine noi plan to sell 100,000 at 8 weeks of a Re. j > el( the remainder being saved for breed-1 abb ing stock, or as egg producers for dicr 1915. wat THE GROWING CHICKS. r,J Two brooder houses, 215 feet long j E by 15 1-2 feet wide, contain 20 pens, a g< 12 by 15 feet, to take care of the chi< growing chicks, or the laying stock not a house is now in use 24 0 feet long | A by 24 feet wide, divided into four t"ec< 60-foot sections, contains 500 laying I Rev hens to each ection. As 500 hens are of : too many to house together each 6 0- con foot section is subdivided into three thii 20 foot sections. Aattached to each ta^ 60-foot house and yards in front and in the rear that are 60 feet wide i and 200 feet long. For growing stock after they leave < the brooder house, are 100 colony i * houses. There is also a grain elevator with a holding capacity of 8.000 bushels of gran: a workhop, 22 by 36 ! feet, two stories high. throughly equipped and containing a 20-horse I power auto gas engine. Th grain de*i elevator has a seven-horse power en- the gine, while the entire farm is elec- ?coa! trically lighted by its own light plant, i 191 It is quite difficult to get the righ,t a<ln sort of eggs for hatching, for it must he remembered that quality aa well as lett< quantity is quite a consideration, but there are several other poultry farms Adn under lease that will contribute their El output toward filling up the incuba- J tion traps. A central egg plant with subsidiary breeding farms is the only j plan that admits of growing stock , I upon a scale commensurate with the | I L requirements of so large a hatchery. | It is needless to say that these East ern breeders are in th business for ' the money that is in it, therefore their i >olicy is to study all the conditions affecting the businsess and adopt their business to the condtions. For instance, people want day-old chicks, subsequent one, until at last discouragd and hearstiek. She is ready to j sell, loan or give away her machine, j and cry out the whole thing is a wretched, miserable failure. They are pletlful upon the market and will hatch successfully one or two seasons and then will become practically worthless. Cheap incubators are constructed of cheap material and are put together by chaeap labor and of course can not be relied upon to give satisfactory hatches season after season. As soon a? they become unreliable they are valuless, and eggs placed in them are a total loss. So it is unwise to take a risk with an inferior make because it is cheap, but one should buy a durable, efficient machine to do the very important work of incubating. BUY GOOD STUFF. It is at this season of the year that this department receives many inquiries that read about as follows: "Are Incubators hard to run?" They pre not hard to operate if you have a good one, but a box with a lamp hung t on one end is worthless. Of course, If one buys a cheap wagon it will give more trouble than a first class, well-made wagon purchased from Wonderful Cough Remedy. T>r Wine's New Dlarnvnrv la Ifnftitn everywhere as the remedy which wiM surely stop a cough or cold. D. f*. I.awson of FJldson, Tenn, writes: "Dr. King's New Discovery ;fs the most wonderful cougb, coW and in my store. It can't be beat. It sells without any trouble at all. It nods no guarantee." This Is true, throat an dlung medicine I ever sold because Dr. King's New Discovery will relieve the most obtstlnate of roughs and colds. Dung troubles quickly helped by Its use.
