T National Institutions Have Till 1> February 22?Many Will Come In. n Washington. Jan. 21.?Misunder- " standing among many bankers as to " that part of the currency act which provides when banks shall enter the reserve system led treasury officials _ to issue a statement tonight, designed ,, to clear up the stltuation and to prevent needless inuuires. The state 1 ment says in part: "A number of banks appear to be under the impression that only banks .J located in reserve cities are reouired as a matter of law to signify their acceptance of the federal reserve act ^ within 60 days from its passage. All a national banks are required to signify " their acceptance or non-aceptance of a the terms of the act within 60 days, a irrespective of their location. "It is not compulsory that State V banks and trust companies shall sig- J< nify within 60 days from the passage a of the act their inentions in the matter." More than 4,620 banks have made T legal application for membership in the new system. If applications continue to reach the treasury at the r present rate there will close to 6,000 by the end of the week. There jt are only 7,500 national banks in the United States and since by far the ^ greater portion of the application are national banks, indications point to '' but few remaining without the system. The limit on banks is February 22. According to treasury officials, the . total capital of the national banks which have formally applied repre- . 8ents about 70 per cent, of the capital of all the nation's national hanks. Eighty-two States banks and trust / companies have applied for membership, and since the approval of the . reserve act December 23, 64 such in- 1 stitutions have expressed their desire r< to become national hanks. n APPEAL TO BAPTISTS tl ' o Secretary of .
