SELF-CONTROL SECRET
of flppi ipn mmiw
Ul 111 I LILU KJ I I1LI IV* l i l
Statement That Should Appeal
to Reason of Everyone.
DEPOSIT IN BANK OF LIFE.
'Without Self-Control You Cannot
A|>| >ly Yourself Consistently to
Your Kveryday Tasks.
You would, I warrant think a man
or woman very stupid, who having
$1,500 in the bank drew it all cut
and threw it into the sea. There is
nothing for us to disagree upon in
this. But what if 1 say', you?some
of you?often act in an equally stupid
fashion, says Lucille West in
The Cleveland Plain-Dealer.
Strangely enough, that is exactly
what I have the temerity to accuse
you of today.
You may not throw away banknotes
nor cause the waters to ripple
with & golden shower of $10 gold
pieces. No! I free you from that
accusation, so as to indict you of a
far worse offense!
In a quick fit of temper, in a morbid
mood, in the pain of resentment,
under the spur of jealousy or hate,
you throw away the gold of living
and demolish your balance at the
Rank nf H.innv T,ifp.
That is not an exaggeration. It is
the truth?sober and sound truth. I
want you to believe me and listen
carefully to what I have to say.
Now, often and often I have written
happiness breeds happiness. Just
as true as it that courage brings
foith courage, that strength gives
greater strength. But I am now going
to speak of weakness, to tell you
that it causes further weakness. And
the feebleness of which I wish to
warn you today is lack of self-control.
It is thus thr.t you throw away the
gold of life; it is thus that the pleasure
of living becomes the pain of existence.
Without self-control you
cannot apply yourself consistently to
your everyday tasks; without it ambition
is dissipated in your misdirection
of energy.
You allow yourself to become
greatly irritated over some trifle or
another; you risk yourself with a
worry, whose principal foundation
lies in your imagination; you resent
some petty annoyance or fly into an
"uncontrollable" rage over another
and greater misdemeanor.
And your easy transport- of unkindly
emotion sap your strength
and destroy your energy. Each
and every one of them is a weakness
making for greater and more fre
quent weaknesses.
You know that within you is r
magnificent and Immeasurable forct
which we term vuaiuv?me verj
spark of life; anil you should know
that this vitality depends upon yoi
for Its food, you either distort It. wltl
evil and weaken It with your failing!
or build It up to enormous beaut:
and strength with goodness and for
titilde?with self-control.
Relieve me now, you can contro
nothing else If you cannot contro
yourself. That statement should ap
peal to your calm reason without an:
argument. And If you have gainei
complete control over yourself, yoi
are In a position to control other
and to build up your life In success
ful achievement after achlevemen
until yon have constructed a mon
ument of strength and goodness.
Self-control is the secret of all ap
plied strength, whether It he of th
body, the mind, or the spirit. Tli<
three appear to he as one. Or rath
er. without control of them all. It I
almost Impossible to gain the contro
of any one.
The physical Is the lowest control
for the action merely depends upoi
the nerves that respond to the brain
and yet this Is a difficult enough of
fort for the Intellect must learn t
resist the purely physical Inclination
of the body.
There at once you have the con
trol of body and mind inextricabl
mixed. There at once It. becomes self
evident that without control of th
mind there Is little control of th
body possible. So it goes on to th
control of the purely mental and o
again to the highest control?that o
ibe snirit?when nothing serves t
disturb the tranquil strength or t
mist the clarity of sight.
I think I have told you, at som
time or another, how. Tn parts of Ir
dla, the children are made to sit i
the busiest part of the bazar or mai
ket place, with their faces to the wal
and that, no matter what commotio
may arise they must take absolutol
no notice of it.
This is nothing more or less tha
an early training in self-control:
results in a wonderful developroer
of the brain?a calmness that !
strength.
So I counsel you to teach yourse
self-control, for its rewards are ii
estimable. Do not imagine th?
when you repress a wilful lnclinatio
toward rage and rate, worry or an
of the kindred uncontrolled evil
you reap no benefit.
Every time you exercise such cor
frol you save your own vitality, yc
guard your energy, which thi
hoards itself up and, creating ne
energies, adds to your strength ar
to your self-control.
Value Of Better Roads.

\ mystery of the countryside
why so many farmers oppose got
roads.
Uncle Sam's recent conntry-wli
inquiry into the economic effect
road Improvement revealed posltiv
ly what had long been believed i
many, that each dollar prudent

roadways for farm haulage added
least a dollar in every instance ai
in most instances more than a doll
to adjoining farm value.
This was an almost immediate a

dition. But If you regard each farm
as a plant and keep its books as
carefully as you would keep the
books of a store or factory, allow
ance should also be made for future *
increase in farm value due to im- t
proved roads. ,
The time isn't far away when every
bit of land in the country capable !m(,
of being made productive will be j
needed to feed the people. Moreover, nol|
capital will be looking for farm
investments as it now looks for un- (ju>
earned increment in the cities. Just j.-r(1
as in the cities it picks the places (or
where travel and economic pressure (>r
are increasing most noticeably so. m .
