KINGVILLE SAFE Iff
Made Third Haul in Pour Days?
Worked Sunday.
The State, May 12th.
Making the third safe robbery iu
four days the postofflce at Kingville
was entered about 4 o'clock yesterday
morning and the safe robbed of
between $7 5 and $100, according to
report received here yesterday. All
of these robberies have followed the
escape of Portland Ned. Last Thursday
morning the safe in the postoffice
at llarr, Lexington county, was

stores at Cayoe were reported to
have been entered.
/ About 4 o'clock yesterday mornf
ing D. J. Boyd, postmaster at King
ville, was aroused from his sleep by
a noise in his store and postofflce
adjoining the room in which he
lives. It was still dark. With his
pistol he went into the store, and
as he did so he saw two men disap?
pear from the building into the early
^ morning shadows. Mr. Boyd did
not fire. Making an investigation
1 he found that the safe had been
opened, by what means ciuld not be
ascertained, and robbed of between
175 and $100.
The conductor on train No. 16,
Columbia to Charleston, on the
Southern Railway, passing through
Kingville at 4:05 in the morning
was reported last night to have
seen a man dart between two of his
cars when No. 16 stopped at Kingville
yesterday morning a little behind
schedule. As the conductor
went forward the man ran, and was
joined by a second man, both of
whom disappeared.
J. D. Dunnaway, rural policeman
for the lower part of Richland
county, was notified of the robbery,
but so far as could be ascertained
no arrests were made. The telephone
exchanges at Kingville 'and |
Eastover were closed last night.
The Industrious Negro.
Wilmington Star.
Not a few white people in and
out of the South make a mistake in
putting all negroes into one class
and judging the whole colored population
by the worst specimens in the
arbitrary generalization. There are
negroes and negroes, just as there
are whites and whites. We of North
Carolina have on ocasion protested
most vigorously and righteously
against the practice of muck-raking
writers from the North, and of
if "missionaries" from the same section,
of holding up the sorriest white
people in the state as typical Tar

as the typical standard of North !
Carolina.
Nevertheless, we ourselves, are
prone to hand to the negro the same
treatment and allow our race prejudice
against everything black to
make us blind to the fact that while
there are negroes little, if any better
than animals, there are negroes who
honestly strive to make progress, j
to produce and to become independent,
law-abiding citizens of some
value to the commonwealth as well
as to themselves and their race. It is
very unjust and unfair to judge
these industrious colored men by >
the negroes who figure in every sesjf
sion of a criminal court.
i |?t' The Star yesterday carried an 5
ijJ item ahout a colored trucker who
' / / is keeping up with the best white
" truckers in the country in producing
truck of quality and getting it on
the market in time to catch the first
and highest prices. Isn't it rather
discouraging to the class of negroes
this man represents, to be thrown
into an off-hand generalization with
the criminal "niggers who spend : '
most of their time coming and go- |
ing between the recorder's court , j
and the chaingang? There are i
thousands of negroes who have
never been in a court, as witness
or principal; thousands who have J
never engaged In crime, but j
who, as best they cau, are doing
their various jobs. They should
have every encouragement and
should be distinguished from the
criminal element of their raoe, beraiiQi*
