r?mr'. 11?111 I -Jt I VETERANS OF BORODINO. SZ I Eight of Them Alive on Centennial f| I Anniversary. 11 I One hundred years ago this fall I I the city of Moscow was burned af- II I ter its ocupation by' Napoleon, and 11 I the terrible retreat of the grand ar- I j I my followed. Just before the cap- II ture of the Russian capital of those 11 days the doubly disastrous battle 11 Of Borodino was fought and officially I I listed as a French victory. Recent- II ly the old battlefield was again || alive with music and banners and II resounded to the tread of mo lng men, for Russia was celebrating the centenary of a defeat that had nearly all the elements of a victory. On the field during the celelujption were eight men who had bravely fought Napoleon's soldiers at Borodino, the lone survivors in Russia of that conflict. One was a non-commissioned officer and the others did a soldier's full duty that day. Iiach of them is 120 years old or more. Records, it is claimed, show that the story of these men is no fiction. The governing generation of today looks upon the story of Napoleon as history almost ancient, but how I close it brings the times he made I so tempestuous when It is possible I to talk with men who fought him I and who in part were responsible I for his downfall! Some very old I folks often add years to their ages I in their claims to longevity; no one I wishes to rut any of their years I away, but often we can hardly ac- I cept the statements of their ages. I Most everybody has met claims with I gusto that he once saw an old relic of slavery times who claims with gusto that he once saw George Washington. Many of these stories have been regarded as harmless J fiction and probably still will be, even though it is shown that eight ! Russians are living today who measured swords with the famous Old { fftard. The last survivor of the Ameri can revolution on the pension rolls ! ? died in New York in 1.869, aged 109. U The last survivor of the war of 1812 : i i on the pension rolls was lliram Cronk of Ava, N. Y., and he died May 13, 1905, at the age of 105. There is probably no soldier of that war alive now to tell of its battles, ! ! yet it was being fought at the very time when Napoleon reached the , ; : first of the two crisis that cost him his throne. How short the century ! that, has intervened seems since it is bridged by less than the span of a man's life and how vivid becomes j the story of those days. The battle of Borodino, in which : the Russian centenarians fought, took place September 7, 1S12, the occupation of Moscow seven days luter and its burning began on the night of September 15. On October j. 19, Napoleon began his retreat that f cost him 400,000 men and practically wiped out his great army. The eight men now surviving have become heroes in Russia and have been the recipients of many honors. Their long life probably is due to simple living in the Russian steppes j where human wants ar?- few.?Savannah News. IX MKMOKIAM. In memory of W T. Pittman, who died March 2 5, 15! 2. Dearest Papa we mourn and grieve Because we know no pleasure now. But Jesus knew best just what to do And 'twas lie that said I am ready, ; ! Williams, for you. One year ago today you passed away From earth to heaven above, And we hope to meet you there, In that land of love. But the All Seeing eye of our Father Who knows the beginning and end, - J Reached down and plucked our j f Papa And we sigh amid tears. Amen. Although 'twas sad to ?-ee thee go. It broke thy family's heart; r But the Lord knows best, and thiwe knowThat the best of friends must part. Yet again we hope to meet thee When the day of life it fled When in heaven with jo vto greet thee Where no farewell tears are shed. Laving daughter, OLA P1TTMAN.
