MODERN EDUCATION IrfP
The direction of all education
throughout the United States is
towards a more practical and
useful education without sacrificing
anything of the old literary
and scholastic education. To
this end, private schools are
more or less giving way to public
schools, and the curriculums
of public schools are being augmented
to carry extension
schools in industrial, vocational,
domestic science and agricultural
teaching. By this means
young men and young women
are educated to participate in
the activities of the communi*
ties in which they live, thus
saving their going away to
some distant country in which
they may find opportunity. It
is found that the practical education
and training helps to
show up the opportunity of any
community. A practical industrial
and agricultural education
qualifies young men and young
women to help out the community,
instead of their education
being a burden on a community.
This is made manifest by the
fact that the A. & M. Colleges
throughout the country are
surpassing in numbers and in
the extent of their curriculiums,
tne old literary and scholastic
institutions. These modern
schools sacrifice nothing of the
old education. The practical
training and instruction is over
and above what has heretofore
been received.
Clemson College, although
only 20 years old, has far outstripped
the university in the
number of its students. This is
true of all A. & M. colleges, as
compared with any of the old
i scholastic and literary institutions.
The Winthrop Normal
School, with its army of girls,1
is doing work that was hereto- j
fore entirely omitted. The!
modern boy or girl, not only re- j
quires a practical education, but!
hey themselves realize it and j
insist upon it. The school at:
Edgefield may be made preparatory
to any of the state institutions
for practical as well as
the scholastic and literary education.?Charlotte

The frankness of this is inimitable,
coming as it does from
v a President of the United States
jr in the last days of his power.
Now that Mr. Taft has himself
confessed it, there are others
who may be inclined to say that
they had observed this fault in
him before he became President.
Whether he has suffered
from it politically is a question
difficult to answer; but possibly
the strongest evidence to show
that he has may be found in
that all-starred Winona speech,
after the enactment of the
Payne-Aldrich tariff. Mr. Taft
put off the composition of it so
long that he finally had to dictate
it between railroad stations
on the way to the Minnesota
fair. When he did begin a real
hustle in the primary light with
Mr. Roosevelt, the reservoir of
energy he drew on and used so
lavishly was of no avail to save
him. But it would, of course,
be beside the mark to place
much emphasis upon what Mr.
Taft calls his sin. He has done
an enormous amount of work
