* ~T A EUROPEAN PARALLEL Late events in Mexico, exciting the hysterical, furnishing excuse to the financially interested to cry for intervention, and offering mouthpieces of monarchies in Europe opportunity to magnify disturbances in a republic and to jeer at this country for not maintaining or- i der in annt.hor rnnntrv mitrVit complicity of the Huerta adminr istration hear the British cries % for intervention! Parenthetically, there are many millions of British money invested in Mexico, and Mexico is a republie. The London Standard deft clares intervention by this country "can hardly longer be delayed," and promises British sympathy in our action. The Daily Graphic calls on the "Big Stick" to do its "duty." The Daily Express urges President Taft to act, but says 9,000 American troops are but "a pill for an earthquake," and that such venture would need 100,000 men. The Daily Chronicle says "no one can envy the United States her task," and that "an enormous army will be needed to conquer Mexico." The Daily News declares the United States "is experiencing the world's indignation at the treachery which brought the Huerta administration into office." The Daily Mail urges the United States to go forward and use its power. The British people, therefore, are shocked at the murder of Madero and consider it ample ground for the United States to intervene, despite the absence of evidence that any government official was implicated. Let us examine a recent parallel but much worse case in ^ Europe, where a monarchy in * tead of a republic was concerned. In 1900, Alexander, King of Servia, then 24 years old, opposed the officers of his kingdom and married a former ladyin-waiting at his court, a woman nine years his senior. Three years later the leading K of ?i 4 nnrv-t Ait 11 n /1 oL iof a la r\ f ntaicoiiicii <11111 </iikkud ui Servia entered into a conspiracy ^ for the removal of the royal couple. They first secured from Prince Peter, the pretender, his consent to take the crown. Then the conspirators let themselves into the royal palace at Belgrade at midnight and murdered the defenseless King and Queen in the most savage manner. They slashed the body of Queen Draga with sabers /until it had lost all humaiy:semblance," and then they/threw LTo Cure u Cold in OncrlJay Take T.AX ATI VE RKOMO Uniuiuf. "V. almost be imagined a conspiracy of the Fates to drag us into the flames of war?easily kindled "**' and difficult to quench. For the ( honor of American statesman- ' ship as well as for the wisdom , Wof our policy it is well that both ' this week and the next men of sober thought are to occupy the White House. The time may come when there will be need and justification for interven- ' tion, but now there is none; yet a President afraid to be right or . one who was a swashbuckler or ' an hysterical firebrand would ( easily go wrong. Sometimes those having such responsibilities as Mr. Taft's and Mr. Wilson's must appreciate that Kipling definition of the part of "a man," beginning: "If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too"? At this writing there is no evidence that Huerta, the provisional President, or any mem bers of his cabinet were impli. cated in the shocking murder of ? Madero and Suarez. On the contrary, the action taken by the cabinet, and the communication to the diplomatic corps by Senor de la Barra, minister i of foreign relations, and the statement by the President, are evidences that the violent deaths of the deposed officials were regarded as causing a dangerous crisis in the affairs of the new administration. 1 Huerta naturally dreads intervention by the United States 1 and he and his advisers knew that the murder of Madero would increase the agitation for intervention.
