How about ex-Vice President
Fairbanks as plenipotentiary to
Chili?
One objection to intervention
would be that it would cause
further additions to the everlasting
pension roll.
Even Wall street doesn't
seem to be doing much worrying
over the prospects of a
Democratic administration.
We notice that there are not
as many aspirants for the
presidency of Mexico as for the
governorship of South Caro
una.
It is hard to imagine more
perfect rest than that which
the long-sutFering husbands of
those "hiking" suffragettes are
now enjoying.
We are glad to announce that
Anderson has at last organized
a chamber of commerce. So we
will not despair of Lancaster
doing likewise at some time in
the near future.
Three more days until Mr.
Taft will sing his swan-song.
But be it said to his credit that
many a Republican has gone
out of the White House less beloved
than Mr. Taft.
We suggest that Presidentelect
Wilson give to ex-President
Roosevelt the post of ambassador
to Mexico. That
would be a position strenuous
enough even to satisfy T. R.
While Castro is knocking at
the doors of different, countries
for admittance, we suggest
that, if he continues to be rebuffed,
he go down to Mexico,
where no questions \vill be asked.
T
i iic umtcu otaic.i 0cuaic
having passed the house public
buildings bill, makes it practically
certain that Lancaster
will get the $50,000 postottice
building, unless the President
vetoes the bill.
We advise The News and
Courier in the event Mr. Bryan
is given a portfolio in President-elect
Wilson's cabinet, to
take its medicine and grin and
bear it. The trial may do the
"old lady of Broad street" good.
Anderson has a crowd of
preachers who are good citizens.
All are paying members of the
chamber of commerce.?Anderson
Mail. If we have such an
organization in Lancaster it
looks like the preachers will
have to get it up.
The Gaffney Ledger is urging
The Yorkville Enquirer to
give it some desired information.
concludes with this appeal
: "Come on David and enlighten
us." Surely David cannot
turn a deaf ear to this appeal
of Jonathan.
The recently elected young
attorney general of the state,
evidently has a vaulting ambition.
He has announced his canidacy
for governor in 1914.
This young man had better wait
and see how he fills his present
office before making the effort
to go higher.
THE CHARLESTON POST
AND MR. BRYAN. Cc
The Charleston Evening Post ni
in an editorial entitled "Fearful ar
of Mr. Bryan," while taking ge
The New York Sun to task for ur
its severe criticism of Mr. nc
Bryan, suggesting that the po- W
sition of The Sun is extreme, at
imp* on to nile it on to Mr. th
r> "? i
Bryan about as severely as The gr
Sun, characterizing him as be- ra
ing "mushy," "too narrow," fe
etc. Fortunately President- ar
elect Wilson is a better judge of ro
the high character and attain- if
ments of Mr. Bryan than either pe
The Sun or The Post, and we
sincerely hope and believe that
notwithstanding the harsh ^
strictures of the one and the insinuations
of the other. Mr.
Wilson will give him the prem- *)0
iership in his cabinet. (ll
The recent ruling of Circuit
Judge Shipp at Anderson to the ?
effect that a person receiving
illicit liquor is as guilty under
the law as the person selling it,
is based upon good common
sense and we hope the present
law is broad enough, to support
his ruling, and in case of an appeal,
if the supreme court does
not sustain Judge Shipp's ruling
the law should be amended
so as to make that law which
should be law. The transporter
and user of illicit liquor should
be punished the same as the
seller. They are all equally
guilty. With the Webb bill and
the law as Judge Shipp understands
it in force, the blind
tiger, his sympathizers and ?
friends will have to get olf the ^
job.
We would suggest to our
farmers to write to the post- p
office department at Washing- I
ton and get the rules and regu- llations
as to shipment of farm
produce by parcel post, especial- I
ly as to the requirements for I
packing and mailing such com- \j
modifies as butter, eggs, fowls, k
etc. The law being new, there
is considerable confusion as to' lr
1
the rules and rates of the service.
The main object of the!
new law is to bring the con-1 ?
Burner and producer closer to- J
gether, which will be to the in- i
terest of both. The new law is I
to become a great factor in reducing
the cost of living and in
quickening the business life of
rural districts. It should he a great
blessing to the country at j
large.
A warning against over- j
production of cotton has been I
given by Mr. E. J. Watson,
South Carolina's commissioner
of agriculture. Why not diver-!
sify your crops, Mr. Farmer?
You may rest assured that food I
products will bring you a good
price, but how can you feel cer- j
tain that cotton will? You need I _
not feel that cotton is the only ??
crop nor even that it is the
most profitable one. Put some
of the lessons taught at the
corn show into practice.

In a letter received a few days j.
ago from a former resident of,
Lancaster, who now resides in ij
the capital city, the writer says,1
| "No place in South Carolina
exceeds Lancaster in the hos-, ^
pitality of its citizens." If j ^
Lancaster's progress measured i
up to her hospitality, we would ^
have the best town in the state,
<
not excepting Rock Hill. <
We note that several of our
exchanges are complaining about
the condition of the, 1
streets and pavements in their
municipalities. That this condition
may have boon even *
i worse can be demonstrated by 1
I their running over and takink I
. a glimpse of our sidewalks and!
streets.
Why is it The News and,
Courier, Charleston Post,
Cireenville Piedmont and other
dailies never can have a kind
word to say of Mr. Bryan ?
