Structures Totally Destroyed.
Savannah, Ga., Feb. 2.?
Damage estimated at $1,500,000
resulted early today from
a fire of unknown origin, which
swept the Savannah rivpr ftwt
I for two blocks, destroying the ||
1 wharves of the Merchants' and II
Miners' Transportation Com- II
pany, several warehouses and ||
business structures and the II
Planters' Rice Mill. II
! The blaze was discovered II
shortly after 1 o'clock this II
morning in a shed on the west- II
ern end of the wharves. All the II
available fire apparatus in the 11
city responded to the general II
alarm and every effort was 11
Imade to check the conflagra- ||
tion, with the assistance of fire II
tugs in the river. The flames II
spread from the Ogechee canal III

tlery, was burned to the ground
this morning. There were
many narrow escapes, and for
a time, some of the guests were
in immediate danger of being
cut off in the upper rooms of
the three-story building or suffocating,
but all of the 44
guests came safely out of the
burning building. Most of them
lost everything they brought
here with them.
A. E. Dick, manager of the
hotel, was overcome by the
dense smoke when he rushed
down into the basement as soon
as the fire was discovered, and
except for the assistance of
some of the help who followed,
would have suffocated. He was I j I

and Miners' freight which was
-X- stored in the warehouses. The
loss to this company is estimated
at $600,000, covered by
insurance.
The American Steel & Wire
Co. warehouses on either side
of the entrance to the Merchants'
and Miners' docks, were
partially destroyed with a damage
estimated at between $50,000
and $75,000, also covered
by insurance.
