VOL. 5. NO. 53. SEMI-V
Importance of School DUciolim
At a meeting of the trustees c
the Lancaster school district hel
Monday in the office of Co
Leroy Springs, chairman of th
board, the resolution .publishe
elsewhere was passed unan
mously. This action was cor
sidored necessary in view <
some recent occurrences in tb
Central school which were ca
culated to do harm. The Boar
have acted wisely in the matte
By the passage of the resolutio
they simply put parents on notic
that if they do not wish corpora
punishment inflicted on thei
children, they must notify th
Superintendent of the fact, i
advance, and be prepared f(
their expulsion for serious o
fenses against the rules of tb
school. In order to operate
school successfully, in any con
munity, it is absolutely necei
sary that discipline should b
maintained at all hazards. 1
parents are permitted to intei
fere and have their way, tb
work of the best tflkchers wi
come to naught. Ninety-nin
times out of a hundred the chil
is in th? wrong* and when tb
parent steps in and takes his c
her part, the result is not onl
subversion of discipline but
serious injury is done the child i
well. Parents should remembc
that the public schools are suj
ported by the taxes of all th
people and should be run for th
common good and not in the ii
terest of any one man or set <
men. Proper consideration shoul
be had for teachers. They ma
have their frailties common I
. humanity?but ns a i.ule r
more earnest and conscientioi
class of people live. Their lot
not often a happy one, especiall
if their efforts are not apprec
ated and their work interfere
with. So, from now on, U
everybody interested in the we
fare of the school give thei
hearty co-operation and suppoi
to both teachers and trustee!
Then Lancaster may well boai
of having one of the best schoo
in the State.

5. Jackson's Birth Place. |
>f Editor Lancaster News*?T -*
d have not closely followed the ^
! controversy with reference to
ie the birth place of Andrew Jacked
son, but looking over Mills' Atlas, 1
i- a copy of which is owned by J
l* Mr. Geo. H. O'Leary of this
town, 1 find a most excellent 1
map of Lancaster County, surb!
veyed aud made by J. Boykin
d for Mills' Atlas in 1820. On the
r- 1 map is marked, "Birth Place of
n Gen. A. Jackson," which is a
:e short distance above John Crawford's
bridge on Waxhaw Creek,
Ir in Lancaster County. g
ie It will be remembered that
n Jackson was not inaugurated
)r | President until 1829, and cerb
tainly there was no controversy
,e as to hi& birth place in 1820, ^
a i when this map was made, and
; yet a reliable surveyor, basing
his information upon what those
who knew Jackson perfectly
f well, and must have known ex- g
r_ actly where he was born, pointed J
ie out as the place of his birth in
d Lancaster County, nine years j
e before he was inaugurated Presd
, ident.
ie It seems to me that this map;*
>r is very strong corroborative eviy
dence that Andrew Jackson y
a knew what he was talking about j
ls when he asserted that he was a
!r native of South Carolina.
